Contest: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

DHarkness-Discovery of WitchesHappy Holidays everyone!

On Tuesday, Penguin will be releasing Deborah Harkness’ debut fantasy, A Discovery of Witches in paperback for the first time. To celebrate, Literary Escapism has a copy to giveaway thanks to the wonderful people at Penguin.

A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Meet Deborah Harkness!

My life has been a series of left turns that nevertheless took me in the right direction (though it didn’t always seem so at the time). I went to college to be a theater major and ended up studying the Renaissance. I went to grad school to become a college administrator and loved to teach so much I became a college professor instead. I thought I wanted to be a Tudor-Stuart historian, and found myself a historian of science. I started blogging because a friend needed help on a project in 2006 and am still blogging about wine today. I started writing a novel in the fall of 2008, and it became a New York Times Bestseller in February 2011: A Discovery of Witches. What’s next? The second volume in the All Souls Trilogy: Shadow of Night.

Contest Time!

We’re giving away a copy of A Discovery of Witches. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: Did you discover a new novel this year? What was it? Have you read A Discovery of Witches – what did you think? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the author by sharing their article, and this contest, on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of this fabulous author ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until midnight December 31st at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I haven’t read A Discovery of Witches yet but it is on my must read list. The novel that I discovered this year was In Camelot’s Shadow by Sarah Zettel and I couldn’t put it down.

  2. I’m in! For the novel I discovered this year, I’ll mention Jennifer McMahon’s Don’t Breathe a Word. It’s a haunting book that will have you wondering, all through it, whether there are actually faeries or whether the characters just have really messed-up lives…and which possibility is more frightening. I was sucked in and could not stop reading.

  3. I discovered a new author to me, and his three novels that released back to back in 2011. Kevin Hearne’s Iron Druid series was fabulous and there will be more books in the series, so I’m excited to read them. I haven’t read Discovery of Witches yet, but I’m looking forward to reading it.

  4. I have yet to read A DIscovery of Witches, I did however discover a bunch of new authors over the past year. Kevin Hearne [Iron Druid series], Sabrina Benulis [Archon], Kendare Blake [Anna Dressed In Blood] and Joseph Nassise [Eyes to See]

  5. I have not read A Discovery of Witches. Sounds wonderful. I have read a new series by Thea Harrison that I enjoyed.

  6. Put my name in the hat please. I discovered an interesting new mystery book Death of the Red Heroine by Qui Xiaolong, set in China in the 1990’s and really went into chinese politics and culture. Fascinating how the police have to take into account whether arresting a murder subject would be good for the Party.

  7. I heven’t read Discovery of Witches yet. I read a lot of books this year but one of my favorite was Divergent.

  8. I read a bunch this year, but The Night Circus is my favorite so far. Discovery of Witches is on my tbr list!

  12. The books I discovered are from the amazing Kevin Hearne. His Iron Druid chronicles are fantastic and I was hooked from Hounded, his debut novel.

Thanks for the giveaway. I’m in the library queue for this book. :)

  13. I love discovering new books and it’s even sweeter when an unsuspecting book by an author who just debuted or is new to me makes it onto my keeper shelf. I read The Taker by Alma Katsu and really really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the next book.

  14. The best novel I discovered this year was So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld. I enjoyed it a lot.
I haven’t read Discovery of witches yet.

  15. I discovered quite a few books/series this year, in part because of a Borders going out business (booo!) buying frenzy. I got the Skinners series, Diana Rowland’s Kara Gillian novels to name a couple, and I love the Vampire Empire books by Susan and Clay Griffith.

I haven’t read The Discovery of Witches, yet, but I saw that it’s out in paperback, so I’m sure I will pick it up.

  16. One novel I discovered was The Rise of Renegade X. It didn’t sound like a book I would enjoy, but it was great.

Hobson, A Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep, Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Barnes, the Living with the Dead series by Jesse Petersen, the Vampire Empire series by Clay and Susan Griffith and the House of Commare series by Kristen Painter

I haven’t read A Discovery of Witches yet but I’ve seen it everywhere.

  18. I have not read A Discovery of Witched yet, but it sounds very interesting. As for books I discovered this year, there have been quite a few: Hounded by Kevin Hearne, Wither by Lauren DeStefano, Divergent by Veronica Roth, Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis, Beauty Dates the Beast by Jessica Sims, and Coyote’s Creed by Vaughn M. Demont. These were all books that snuck up on me in 2011. I really enjoyed them even though I hadn’t planned on picking them up originally.
