Where did you get that idea?
That’s the question I’ve been asked several times by family and friends who learn about Perpetual Light. It’s funny to be on the receiving end of that question.
To be face to face with someone who wants to know more about my idea, where it came from and how I wrote the story is exciting and embarrassing and surreal all at once. I’m not a showman so touting my own concepts or expertise is not always comfortable. I’m still learning how to give a complete answer without including so many details that I bore my listener to tears. I give it my best nervous shot and then change the subject because I’m fairly certain I’ve given an incomplete and boring answer.
Well today, in writing I’m making one more attempt and I’m not going to spend hours rehashing my answer before you get to read it. I’m putting it out there and hoping you will find it intriguing and not just some flat, boring, way too wordy explanation of my book.
The idea for Perpetual Light came to me after reading several vampire stories, from romance to horror to urban fantasy. In every book the vampires had personalities. They weren’t just monsters sent to feed off humans, killing them or creating new vampires each night. This is what made me wonder.
Do vampires have souls? Are they creatures damned to walk the earth for eternity terrorizing humans but never able to be redeemed?
Being a Christian I believe in salvation and that everyone has the opportunity to be saved which led me to decide vampires do have souls and can choose redemption.
Of course, then the romantic in me began scheming.
One thing that makes the vampire romance concept exciting is the idea of the vampire being so tempted by the human, tempted to take a sip from her and potentially lose control, nearly killing his beloved and having to change her into a vampire, condemning her to an existence like his –one that’s oh, so tortured. And then there’s the fact that someone, somewhere must be hunting the vampire or even the human or possibly both so now they have to contend with the vampire’s desires and defending themselves against some external opponent.
I couldn’t just let the question of redemption be on the vampire’s end. Oh no. My heroine needed some problems of her own, even if they didn’t align with my Catholic upbringing. What if they’d met hundreds of years earlier and she loved him so much that her soul wouldn’t rest until his did? What if she kept being reincarnated over and over until she found him?
That was the beginning of my story. Well, really the entire story until I went to RWA National in 2010 and had the good fortune of sitting at dinner with Ella Drake, Jax Cassidy, and Chudney who listened to my synopsis and my plea of “Help me with this. There’s still something missing.”
We discussed idea after idea and nothing clicked, but new conflict was brewing and there was a light at the end of the creativity tunnel.
It took a couple days for this final concept to become clear, but when it did I moved so fast, even I couldn’t believe I’d figured it out.
So, we have our hero, Vittorio dealing with his undead soul wandering, needing redemption, but unable to receive it and our heroine, Lucia, whose soul won’t rest because she loves her vampire so much she must be with him. But what happens when they find each other and together realize that it’s not just her love for him that keeps her soul restless? What happens when they realize that she is one of the chosen? A soul sent to bring lost souls to the light. A divine vampire slayer. The one who’s avoided her destiny since she met him.
Ah-ha! That’s it. She has to kill him! Perfect.
Oh, and there really is another bad guy after her because who wouldn’t want to possess a power great enough to allow you to rule every vampire and take over the world?

Meet Jordan Rose!
After trying her hand at many, many things- from crafting and art classes to cooking and sewing classes to running her own handbag business, Jordan finally figured out how to channel her creativity. With an active imagination and a little encouragement from her husband she sat down and began to write, each night clicking away at the keys with her black Labrador, Dino curled up under the desk.
A few short years later she’s entered the publishing arena with no plans to ever turn back.
