After Dark on Bourbon Street

Adventures from the Highlands to New Orleans

Hamish took hold of the poker and thrust iron rod into the burning logs causing a flutter of embers to burst forth as he sat back in his chair. Stretching his legs out before him, he lifted his glass and took a healthy swig of whisky. Highland winters were cold, he was used to them, but it wasn’t what had him sitting in the folly by himself sinking into his dark thoughts. It was the same every year and he had hoped it wouldn’t happen anymore. When February rolled around he wondered what life would have been like if—.

“I was sitting in my office looking out the window instead of working and saw the smoke trailing from the chimney. Are you sitting in here thinking far too much about things you can’t change?” Grace, the light and joy of his life, knew him so well, maybe too well. She knew his foibles and apparently wasn’t going to let them take over. That was fine, he would love for her to cheer him up and maybe ease the strain building between his legs.

“The path was icy, you shouldn’t have walked up here by yourself, but since you’re here…” Setting his glass on the floor, Hamish reached out for her hand and used the hold to bring her to sit on his lap. Stretching up to kiss her soft plump lips, she put a finger across his to stop him for going any further.

“No, we don’t have time for this, but we will later.”

“What are you talking about?” Wrapping his arms around her waist, he held her close and tried to figure out a way to change her mind about talking instead of satisfying their needs. His cock grew hard as he tried to figure out how to strip off her jeans and lift his kilt so they could fuck before the fire. That would definitely chase away the cold and gloomy mood he’d been in.

“You and I are going away, far away from the chilly Highlands. We’re going to New Orleans. It’s a lovely romantic city I’ve always wanted to visit and I booked us for a two week holiday. I read the average winter temperature is around 13 Celsius, mid-50’s in Fahrenheit. Sounds lovely, but that’s not all. There’s the historical architecture and parks, carriage rides, fabulous food and, and our hotel is in the heart of the ooo-la-la French Quarter.”

“But—.” He was in a difficult place. While he set out each to ensure Grace was happy and had everything she wanted, his reality made this trip impossible.

“No buts, we’re already packed and ready to leave.” She smiled at him and started to move off his lap, but his hold on her tightened.

“Stop, lass. I hate saying no and yet I must. These, these…” He pointed to his head and frowned. For the first time in a long time he truly hated his physical limitations.

“I forgot to mention it was Mardi Gras time and the Americans take the event seriously, particularly in New Orleans. The party is raucous fun with many folks donning fancy dress and masques to watch a parade pass by or just because they want to dress up. I’ve been told people wear costumes day and night walking the streets without a second glance from others. I think you and I would blend in rather well,” she leaned to press her lips to his and then moved to whisper in his ear. “If you buy the beads, I’ll lift my shirt for you wherever you’d like and shake my boobies for you.”

Grace let her jacket fall off her shoulders then shifted his hands as she lifted her sweater and t-shirt underneath. Her breasts were more than a handful and topped with cherry red nipples ready for him to feast on. They were treats and he was unable to deny their lure. Hamish cupped the lush fleshy wonders and felt his rod stiffen further in response. He wanted so bad to take her to New Orleans, it sounded fun, but very risky for him to do without serious planning.

“Maybe next year,” he muttered as he strummed a red tip and watched it harden with excitement. “We’ll make plans and—”

“Alan and I have on organizing the trip for months. We have a private flight at our disposal. No excuses Hamish, you and I are going to New Orleans.” She moved off his lap and smiled at him in way that made him believe it was actually possible.

The pretty petite woman standing in front of him with her top pulled above her breasts meant everything to him and he wanted her to be happy. It was scary to think about going so far away from his territory. Scotland was where he felt most comfortable, even England he could handle, but across the Atlantic? In America? Could he really make the trip and not cause an uproar heard around the world?

“I want to, Grace, but I don’t know. The scandal if someone saw my—”

“February is a difficult time for you, Hamish and the trip would be exciting, an adventure. We don’t know what will happen, but New Orleans sounds so exciting. Let’s see what kind of fun we get into and take things as they come.”

One look into her gray eyes and he was lost. She had his heart in her hands. No matter how afraid he was of the unknown, he’d do what she asked and make her pay for going behind his back to arrange the trip. Maybe that carriage ride she mentioned was done with her riding his cock. Yes, he needed to make a plan, but it would be his surprise for Grace.

“What do you think about going to a jazz club and dancing all night, pigging out on beignets’ as the sun rose and then visiting a voodoo priestess to see what she makes of my unique attributes?” He laughed when she leaped into his arms.

“Really? You’d do all that with me?”

“All except for the voodoo bit,” Hamish muttered between kisses. His woman was worth some fear.

There you have it, the hero and heroine of Highland Heat are heading off to New Orleans for an adventure. Lucky for Hamish he’ll be able to blend in with the crowd…oh, wait a second, maybe you don’t know about his, well, his issue. I’m sorry to say it’s a secret, but I’ll be talking a bit about him at the Authors After Dark Odd Shifters panel. In the meantime, here’s a little something about the book:

TGreene-Highland HeatHow do you know when to trust someone with a secret held for a lifetime?

On the surface, Hamish Buchanan has it all and because of the horror surrounding his birth, he possesses the love and respect of the entire Scottish nation. But underneath, where few are allowed, lurks a secret. Although well hidden, the furtiveness needed to keep others from discovering it, also keeps him from committing fully to another.

One night, he discovers there’s a part of him that thinks he’s hunting something, or someone. Unable to shake the odd feeling, Hamish doesn’t put it all together until he sees Grace Strachan, only then does he begin to understand what’s going on. He’s in season and she is his mate.

Establishing trust with another has never been easy, but Hamish must find a way with Grace or risk losing her forever, and that simply isn’t an option.

Over the years I’m often asked if I have a favorite character and I’d have to say Hamish Buchanan is up there. He’s a special man with unique attributes and an interesting way of dealing with them when it comes to sex. Yeah, he’s a great guy and I adore him so thought I’d share the love and give a copy of Highland Heat to a commenter.

Hope to see you in New Orleans this August at the Authors After Dark Readers Convention.

Contest Time!

Thank you Tilly for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism for our Authors After Dark on Bourbon Street event!

Tilly is giving away a copy of Highland Heat. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: What do you think Hamishs’ secret is? While we’re at the AAD Conference, where should we hit up?  Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

In addition to the fabulous prize above, Larissa and I are giving away two $25 ARe gift certificates, so be sure to answer the question.

Even though we won’t be giving any additional entries, you can still help support the authors by sharing this event and their articles on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of these fabulous authors will ensure we get more fabulous stories.

The contest will stay open until February 21st at which time we’ll determine the winners with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have, the Research Randomizer and the List Randomizer.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

  1. Hits Sandy!

I guess I forgot to note the genre, my bad :-) Highland Heat is an Erotic Shapeshifter Romance + bondage, all that said, Hamish is not a traditional shifter, far from it. In fact, if you’re going to AAD NOLA then you’ll find out a bit more if you go to the Unusual Shifter panel. Hope to see you there, but in the meantime, I have tournament in the bowl :-)

  2. With the words “hunted” and “mate” thrown in there, I would say his secret is that he is some sort of shapeshifter; the predator kind. A more specific guess would be a wolf because they are a predator that do take mates.

  3. You’re right Crahm, he is a shifter, but not a wolf and not a predator either, I guess a better way of putting it would be a sheep in wolves clothes :-)

Not to worry, I have you in the bowl!

  4. He must be some kind of shifter. He must be a paranormal creature of some kind. I am intrigued by what his secret might be.

You have to visit LaFayette cemetary and the mystical shops.

  5. Hiya StacieD – I can tell you that his secret started on a Valentine’s Day gone horribly wrong.

Thank you for the hints on NOLA – I’ve never been and want to make time to see some of the town and the cemetary is top of the list. I went to one in Savannah, where AAD is in 2013, and it was very interesting and I know the NOLA one will be as well.

Have you in the bowl darlin’!

  6. Hm, ok so he is a shapeshifter, a bunny maybe? Or at least not a carnivore…
Beignets sounds good as some local food to try in NOLA :)

  7. I hope my comment went through it said it was marked as spam & the site admin had to clear it. :( if not I guessed a male sheep since Tilly made the commment of “a sheep in wolves clothing”

  8. HA! Crystalj026! Ding! Ding! Ding! Well, I wondered if anyone would catch that slip of the fingers :-)

Hiya Lyra, good guesses as well. I’m not sure I’ll be able to do the tour, have loads I’m already scheduled for, but I imagine it will be a blast!

Have you both in the bowl and shall be drawing a name tomorrow morning.

    Tilly

  9. Hmm, I’ll go with something that hasn’t been said, a Ram. :)
Sounds like a great book, will have to add it to my TBR list! Can’t wait to meet ya in NOLA Tilly!

  10. Thank you, darlin’, I’m actually rather partial to Hamish and his more unique qualities :-) I have you in the bowl and I’ll see you in, what is it, 5 months? OMG! 5 MONTHS and we crash NOLA – watch out Louisiana, we love books and aren’t afraid to show it!

    Tilly

  11. Actually, Ellie, I’ve thought of doing a kelpie – a water horse of sorts – but haven’t yet. Need another trip to Scotland to get that one started. But no, Hamish isn’t a selkie or seal shifter. I think it’s going to be fun never having been there. No matter how much or little I see, it will be a treat :-)

Have you in the bowl darlin’!

    • Sorry Crystal! All the Bourbon Street contests are going through the 28th and will be posted on the 1st. I had hope that I caught all the dates, but I must have missed one.

  12. Thanks Jackie! I don’t know where I’d seen it but I thought this contest ended the 21st. :) lol Thanks for answering so quick :)

  13. Well, I definitely think he has horns from the snippet. Not sure exactly what type of creature he is, though. Maybe a goat/ sheep as others have suggested?…Makes me want to know, though! I hope you ate some beignets!

  14. Hiya Melissa! No beignets yet, but I cant wait to try one or three :-) Have you on the bowl to win a copy of Highland Heat so your curiosity can be put at ease.
