I absolutely adored Michelle Rowen’s Demon Princess series so I was beyond ecstatic when I found out that Rowen was self-publishing the rest of the series. Reign Check, book 2, didn’t exactly end on a cliffhanger but it was nowhere near the end and Reign Fall was totally worth the wait.
Prophesies, demon slayers, dragons, homework… It’s going to be a hell of a week!
It’s been a dangerous ride for Nikki Donovan since she first learned she’s a demon princess. And the ride isn’t over yet!
She’s just found out that her best friend is a demon slayer in training, one who doesn’t know that Nikki is exactly the prey she’s sworn to hunt. Nikki’s demon king father has signed her up for lessons on how to master her erratic half-demon powers, and that’s on top of her regular homework! Also, she’s torn between two boys—Rhys, the faery king she’s prophesied to marry, and Michael, a Shadow whom she’s forbidden to love.
To top it all off, a dark force is haunting Nikki, something mysterious and evil that wants the demon princess dead…but who—or what—is it?
Nikki has grown a lot since her first book, Reign or Shine. She’s more independent, more assertive and she’s getting better at saving herself from the bad guys. She’s also really, almost brutally honest. For example, she told Michael about her kiss with Rhys and how she liked it. Major kudos to Nikki for being that honest.
Of course, that leads to the best part of Reign Fall, which was the increased tension in the love triangle between Nikki, Michael and Rhys. I know Nikki really likes Michael, and yeah he has saved her life a few times in the previous books, but I’m Team Rhys all the way. He’s arrogant and self-assured yet still has this boyish charm that shows he hasn’t finished growing up. Michael, on the other hand, is very submissive and won’t stand up for himself. Though that’s mostly due to the fact that he’s a servant and grew up having to obey others. Logically, it makes sense that he acts that way but it doesn’t make it any less annoying.
The plot of Reign Fall was fairly fast paced. There was teenage angst, though it was up beat and humorous. (Yes, teenage angst CAN be up beat! Who would have thought?) Not to mention the danger that lurked around every corner in both the human and faery worlds. The ending set up for even more action, adventure and awesomeness to come in Reign Storm.
I can’t sum up Reign Fall better than nafiza from Amazon who said, “If you are in the mood for fluff, hot boys and kick ass heroines, give this series a go. You will laugh, swoon and sometimes roll your eyes. It’s good as ice cream.” Except it’s like ice cream with hot fudge and a cherry on top.
