Bourbon Street: Beth Williamson/Emma Lang (+Contest)

AAD Burbon StreetDid you see the latest AAD Author visiting Larissa’s Bookish Life yesterday with her own After Dark on Bourbon Street story? You should totally go read it…like now.

After Dark on Bourbon Street

This ain’t your grandmamma’s westerns.

I’ve had the reaction before. Quite a bit actually. When I say I write historical westerns, eyes glaze over and visions of Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne fill their minds. I’m here to say, this ain’t your grandmamma’s westerns.

Historical westerns in the romance world today are not even remotely what you may have read thirty or even twenty years ago. I know because I read all of them.

When I started writing my own historical westerns, I knew I was going to break out of the mold. No sweet, pure girlies who shiver when the big cowboy walks by. Or worse, the annoying loudmouth brat who treats the cowboy like he’s the crap on her shoe. *shakes head*

No siree. I broke the mold y’all. My heroines are strong, smart and don’t take no backtalk from anyone, least of all a man. They don’t have quivering loins or weep every five minutes. These ladies are tough, just as I hope all western women were.

Some of them wear pants, or pistols on their hips (or both). Others are stronger than steel and make choices that would make a grown man cry. They are bad-ass chicks and I love all of them.

The heroes? Well I am a total sucker for the alpha cowboy. However, with my alpha heroines, there are always fireworks, hot sparkly ones. While my cowboys are strong, they find themselves in love with a woman who is stronger. It’s a battle royale and in the end, they are partners who love and are loved.

In addition to my characters busting out of the cookie cutter, I also tend to put dark undertones and violence. Blood, brains, guts, and women who kill because they have to. There are people with disabilities, alcoholism, homelessness and PTSD.

Yes, these are HISTORICAL westerns. Everything I put in my books, from the emotional to the social issues, happened 150 years ago just as it does today. It was as real to them as it is in a contemporary romance.

All that to say, I write it real, hard, sexy and emotional stories, from 1830s to 1890s and everything in between. If you haven’t read a historical western romance in a while, you should give one a try. Once you go cowboy, you never go back.

Contest Time!

ELang-MatthewThank you Beth for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism!

Beth is giving away a signed copy of Circle Eight: Matthew. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: Have you been to Bourbon Street? What about New Orleans in general? While we’re at the AAD Conference, where should we hit up? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the author by sharing their article, and this contest, on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of this fabulous author ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until February 28th at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

About Jackie 3282 Articles
I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I wish I was going to AAD and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I’ve never been. I love the food in Louisiana so I would suggest you hit some of the famous restaurants. You could also go to some of the mystical shops in NO.

  2. Never been to Bourbon street or New Orleans. Try some food that is specific to New Orleans, while there for the AAD conference :)

  3. So far I’ve never been to either but I’d love to visit some day in the future. I would also say to try some beignets with the AAD crowd!

  4. I wish to visit both but never been there so far. Do visit the French Quarter with the participants of the AAD Conference!

  5. I’ve been to New Orleans/ Bourbon Street once- it was great! Food, food, food is at least one thing you need to see while in New Orleans.
