Bourbon Street: Sophie Oak

AAD Burbon StreetDid you see the latest AAD Author visiting Larissa’s Bookish Life yesterday with her own After Dark on Bourbon Street story? You should totally go read it…like now.

After Dark on Bourbon Street

I love cities. I’m known for writing small towns, but the truth of the matter is I grew up in a city, and I adore them. There’s cadence and rhythm to the great cities of the world. I love New York. I’m never more invigorated than when I’m walking the streets of Manhattan, subways churning beneath my feet. London is another favorite. I feel the history as I walk along the Thames.

But I’ve always wanted to see New Orleans.

It haunts me. The songs – “Moon Over Bourbon Street” by Sting and “Bloodletting” by Concrete Blonde were favorites of mine, inspiring me to want to visit and write and sink into the city. The jazz. The beignets. Tennessee Williams.

I’m from Texas, that great gateway between the South and the West. New Orleans is close and yet it’s worlds away, a foreign land where it seems to me that anything can happen – and probably does.

When I found out that Authors After Dark would take place in New Orleans, I was thrilled to be a part of it. I will finally be able to see the city where vampires are born and voodoo rules the night.

But more than my fevered imaginings, I will be able to take the pulse of a place that is utterly unique. I started this blog with the idea that I would go over the five places I wanted to see, but it’s more than that. I want to feel. In the last few years, New Orleans has gone through hell. And it’s risen again. Its citizenry has refused to allow the uniqueness and originality of New Orleans to pass from this earth, swallowed by the very waters that gave it birth. They took back their city. They took it back from the storm and from the terror. They are rebuilding, perfecting. So when I get the privilege of walking the streets of the French Quarter in August, I will do what I love to do in the cities of this world. I will take it in. I will take a piece of the city with me, and hopefully, leave a small piece of myself there.

Contest Time!

Thank you Sophie for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism for our Authors After Dark on Bourbon Street event!

While we’re at the AAD Conference, where should we hit up?Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered

Even though we won’t be giving any additional entries, you can still help support the authors by sharing this event and their articles on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of these fabulous authors will ensure we get more fabulous stories.

The contest will stay open until February 21st at which time we’ll determine the winners with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have, the Research Randomizer and the List Randomizer.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I would like to try a few of the local dishes, those unique to the area. I’d go for something I’ve never tried before.
