Weekly Geeks #10 – Magazines

Weekly Geeks is back and this time we’re talking about the magazines we read.

For each magazine you want to talk about, here are a few questions. Answer as many or as few as you want.

  1. Name of magazine.
  2. Do you subscribe or just buy it now and then?
  3. What’s your favorite regular feature in the magazine?
  4. What do you think your interest in this magazine says about you?
  5. How long have you been reading this magazine?
  6. Is there any unique or quirky aspect to the magazine that keeps you reading?

This one is actually really hard for me. Honestly, I don’t have a magazine that I am a huge reader of. I read the covers of the tabloid trash in the supermarket lines, but that’s mainly for something to do while the lady in front of me is taking her time loading the conveyor belt and writing her check (fyi…this happened to me just this past week and she was so mesmerized by the TV they had flashing ads). Whenever I’m near books, I tend to go straight for them and bypass the magazines completely.

I have found a couple that are interesting, but I haven’t been able to get my hands on them yet, or have had the time to really read them online, so I can’t say if they are good or not, but I’ll list them here so other people can discover them.

Bite Me Magazine – I found this magazine when Amber mentioned a couple of her book reviews were accepted and were going to be printed in an edition. I want to say this is a UK publication, but it focuses on vampires, the supernatural, and anything else that goes bump in the night. They have tons of interviews, news on horror movies, books and video releases, plus they feature different film classics from the past. Issue 20 is currently out and can be bought here.

Horror Bound Magazine – This is actually a fairly new publication and is completely online. If you’re a fan of Horror, then this is the place to be…or so I’m told. It actually focuses primarily on the literary side of horror, but they may mention a few films and other things. They have a lot of interviews and are even able to give sneak peeks to some upcoming horror novels. Currently, they are featuring Paul Alabaster and his upcoming novel Dolly Carter Island. They also feature something not a lot of others add and that is artwork. One of my favorite types of art is the fantastical and they have a pretty good selection. This is one I have probably spent the most time on and I still haven’t gotten through everything yet.

Dark Realms Magazine – This is kind of sad, but the magazine is closing its doors this fall. I just found them and I’ve liked what I have seen, so I’m kind of bummed they won’t be around for much longer. It seems to be a Gothic sort of novel, but not necessarily over dramatic. They feature artwork as well, plus they showcase a lot of the culture that comes from the paranormal and other Gothic mentalities. They are currently selling issue #31 and issue #32 is their farewell, so if you’re interested in checking them out, then you really don’t have much time.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
