Grave Dance by Kalayna Price

KPrice-Grave DanceAs soon as I finished Grave Witch, I had to get my hands on Grave Dance. This sequel left me on the edge of my seat drooling over the yummy man candy and wanting more.

Whoever said dead men tell no tales obviously never met Alex Craft.

After a month spent recovering from a vicious fight with a sorcerer, grave witch Alex Craft is ready to get back to solving murders by raising the dead. With her love life in turmoil thanks to the disappearance of Fae Investigation Bureau agent Falin Andrews and a shocking “L” word confession from Death himself, Alex is eager for the distractions of work. But her new case turns out to be a deadly challenge.

The police hire Alex to consult on a particularly strange investigation in the nature preserve south of Nekros City. The strange part: There are no corpses, only fragments of them. A serial killer is potentially on the loose, and Alex has no way to raise a shade without a body, so she’ll have to rely on the magic of others to find leads. But as she begins investigating, a creature born of the darkest magic comes after her. Someone very powerful wants to make sure the only thing she finds is a dead end—her own.

Alex’s friends are wonderful, but she needs a secret identity, because now someone is targeting the people around her. Everyone from Grave Witch shows up in Grave Dance, except her sister (understandable). Her fun friends Tamara & Holly, her landlord Caleb gets a bigger part, her cop-buddy John is better, and of course the two yummy men Falin and Death make an appearance. Falin stumbles into her life again mucking up old feelings that she was hoping had settled, and this wasn’t made any easier by Death hanging around, very very closely.

She starts learning more about her ancestry that was uncovered back at the end of Grave Witch, and that, among other things, takes her to Faerie. In Grave Dance we get to see much more of the Faerie people, their realm and how human magic interacts with…everything else. Somehow Alex’s magic starts opening rifts between planes, letting the Athelric and it’s magic pour through tears she’s made into normal space. We got our first hint at that back in Grave Witch, when she is using her grave sight and made the steps of the Bloom crumble. It just gets worse and more complicated from there.

All this is going on around a mystery involving left feet and the independent Faeries in Necros being rounded up by the Winter Queen. They’re all connected in one way or another. Nothing is quite as it seems, especially when faeries keep using glamour to make you believe something is real. The part with the independent faeries being captured by the Winter Queen wasn’t quite resolved by the end. I keep wondering if the ending is some sort of foreshadowing, if so, I’m really trying to figure out a way for it to end well for Alex.

I’ve read Kalayna Price other novels, Once Bitten and Twice Dead, and loved them. She’s an awesome author and I can’t wait for the third books of both lines to come out.
