Look Who’s Going to RT: Lynne Connolly

Lynne ConnollyCan you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
I’ve been published for about ten years now (scary thought!) I do everything you’re not supposed to – I write different genres under the same name, I write for several publishers, not just one, I review books for a blog site. But I love it. When I started in publishing I promised myself it would never be “just another job,” and so far I’ve achieved. that. I wake up every morning thinking, “Oh, goody, I get to write!”

Can you introduce us to the world that you have created?
World?
I write historicals set in the mid-Georgian era, notably the Richard and Rose books. In that, I haven’t created the world. I do a lot of research to try to get it right, and count it as a privilege that I’m allowed to do so.

I also write paranormal romances (Dept 57 {Cat’s Eye}, Pure Wildfire {Sunfire}, STORM {Red Alert}). They’re all basically the same world. I have shape-shifters, vampires, and Sorcerers, a race of people genetically different to most people because of their ancestry. Shape-shifters are all mythical beasts, so I don’t have werewolves. I have dragons, griffins, jaguar-gods, bastets, anything I can find that sounds interesting! My vampires are daywalkers, but they only have their vampire powers between sundown and sunup. The Sorcerers have awesome psi powers, but they don’t have a mental barrier against the rest of the world, they have to build it, so they are cold and analytical.

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
I’ve been a few times before, and loved it every time. I fly over from the UK to attend every year.
Wear comfortable shoes, and remember – they don’t have to be dorky or unstylish. Ballet shoes are great.
Even if you don’t drink, spend a lot of time in the bar. That’s where everybody congregates.
Spend some time on your own. If you go around with the same people all the time, that’s all you’ll meet. And there are some awesome people there.
If you see someone you want to talk to, go and talk to them, if they’re not busy.

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to?
I’m teaching at the precon beginner’s classes, and that’s something I enjoy. I’m on two panels during the main conference – History Fan Fictionary, a game we’re hoping will be a lot of fun for everyone. That’s with Susannah Kearsley, Lauren Willig and Amanda McAbe. I’m also on a panel about using pseudonyms (or not).

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
The woman who talks funny with a dragon in her ear!

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
