Bossypants by Tina Fey

TFey-BossypantsI don’t read a lot of non-fiction, memoirs, autobiographies, etc.; they just aren’t something I’m into.  However, when I saw that Tina Fey had written a memoir, I knew I had to read it.  Fey is by far one of my all time favorite female comedians, so I figured if anyone could keep me interested in their life story it was her.  Thankfully, Bossypants did not disappoint.

Bossypants takes you from Tina Fey’s childhood all the way through the first few years of 30 Rock and manages to keep the reader entertained the entire time.  Fey’s is exactly how I pictured it to be…brutally honest, genuine, and incredibly funny.  It almost felt as if she was sitting right there with me telling me her life story; which I loved.

Fey talks about what a geek she was growing up, her missteps with love, what it was like to work at Saturday Night Live, how it felt to play Sarah Palin, and what it’s like to create an amazing show like 30 Rock.  It was so much fun getting to hear the background story on all of it and I definitely learned some interesting things too.  For instance, did you know that she was merely a writer for SNL and the only thing she ever did (before the Sarah Palin skits) on air was Weekend Update?  She tells the reader that many of her fans don’t realize this and I definitely was one of them.

Honestly I can’t speak highly enough about Bossypants.  Tina Fey does an amazing job of keeping the reader engaged as she reveals her life story.  She’s not afraid to lay it all out there and make fun of herself.  It was refreshing to see a star that doesn’t take herself seriously.   In fact, at times, she doesn’t give herself enough credit.  The book moves at an entertaining pace, telling you just enough about each period in her life without boring the reader with too much detail.

Whether or not you’re into memoirs/autobiographies, if you like Tina Fey, I recommend you give Bossypants a try.  If you’re anything like me you’ll love the book and find yourself liking the actress/comedienne even more.

  1. I picked up Bossypants from Audible when it was a freebie audiobook about a year ago. I just got around to listening to it a month ago. Now, I’m not into memoirs/autobiographies either. In fact, they bore me to tears. I don’t think I could have sat and just read this book. BUT what made me want to listen to this, was the fact that Tina Fey narrates. And OMG too funny! I found myself suppressing my laughter (since I listened to/from work on my commute) throughout various chapters in the book. This was an awesome audiobook because Tina Fey narrated it. Tina Fey should narrate more books! I HIGHLY recommend it in audio!

  2. I can’t wait to read this one either, I absolutely love Tina Fey.

However, I can’t believe neither of you like memoirs! I’m going to recommend a few that I’ve read and loved. Both books by Russell Brand were awesome, but if you don’t like him, you may not think so. Wade Rouse’s At Least in the City Someone Would Hear Me Scream is beyond hilarious and Michael Ian Black’s Your Not Doing It Right was equally hysterical.

  3. I’ve not really heard much about Tina Fey, but I’ve heard a lot about her book. Everyone seems to be raving about it! I may just have to grab myself copy :)

  4. @Nikki-ann: You definitely should! Fey is funny, charming, and holds nothing back. It’s a great read!

@Brunette Libraian: I’m going to have to add that to my TBR list. I love Minday Kaling!

@Kristen: Thanks for the recommendations! I’m not a huge Russell Brand fan, but I do love Michael Ian Black. I’m going to have to give his a read for sure! As for Wade Rouse the name sounds kind of familliar but I can’t place it…

@Ferishia: Ooohhh I’m going to have to get my hands on the audio copy. The fact that she narrates is awesome. I bet it makes the book that much more enjoyable!
