Oh the lure of a good sounding blurb. The blurb for Darkness Becomes Her by Jaime Rush totally sucked me in. However, I’m sad to say I had to DNF Darkness Becomes Her; it was just lack-luster and I couldn’t connect with the characters or the storyline.
They live ordinary lives, but they are extraordinary. They are the Offspring, children of a mysterious experiment gone awry—and they are in terrible danger.
Power Junkie: Lachlan McLeod spent wild years astrally projecting himself into other times and places. But he doesn’t get out much anymore—not after the fatal mistake that cost him a precious loved one.
Pixie Fugitive: Jessie isn’t having a bad day. She’s having a bad lifetime. After the terrifying act of supernatural violence that destroyed her family, she’s been on the run for years. But now her ruthless enemy is drawing closer . . . and her own powers have finally awakened.
They’re two people who don’t play well with others. But they’re going to have to learn to, and quickly. Because they’re the only two people in the world who can save each other—and their passion is the only thing that can save the world.
See, Darkness Becomes Her sounds really interesting and piqued my interest, so I thought I would give it a shot. However, three chapters in and I just was unable to keep going. What really was the nail in the coffin for me, was the fact that every few paragraphs the POV would change. It would go back and forth between Jessie and Lachlan. There was no warning, and there didn’t seem like there was any rhyme or reason for the POV shift. This drove me batty.
After I tried to read Darkness Becomes Her, I was told by some friends that this was actually book 6 in the series, not the first book. Sooo, it appears I’ve missed a LOT of world building and back story. These friends also told me that yeah, it’d be helpful to read the previous books. Thus it appears I should go find the first three and start reading. I totally take responsibility for the misunderstanding of thinking Darkness Becomes Her was the first novel in a new series.
