Escapist Newsletter (Vol. 3 Issue 6)

I am soooo running late with this months edition. Sorry guys, but better late than never, right?

Check out what I found over at Dan Dos Santos’ website. It’s the cover for the upcoming Mercy Thompson Homecoming graphic novel that comes out July 21, 2009. Is this cover not hot?  I love Santos work.

For those who remember, I ran a contest in the 5th issue of the Escapist newsletter.  I was looking for some input on what should be or shouldn’t be added to the newsletter and I ended up with a lot more than I thought I would.  I’ll be honest, I didn’t think a lot of people read this whole thing, so I was happy to find out they do.  I’ve added a few new authors to my site visits, so hopefully I’ll find some new info for everyone.  I know I need to post the winner, but I’m going to do that when I announce the winners for the HBG Mother’s Day, HBG Latino Book Month, HBG Asian Heritage Month, Shane Briant and Judy Fennell contests, plus since I haven’t heard from the winner of the Robin Kaye contest, I’ll draw another name.  That’s a lot of names for the randomizer to draw, so all of the names will be posted tomorrow.

For more excellent releases, check out SciFiGuy’s list – he tends to have a lot more of the straight fantasy than I do.

Larissa Ione has announced that she’s working on the fourth Demonica novel.  Ecstasy Unveiled, which is going to be Lore’s story, has a tentative release date of February 2010.  If you don’t know who Lore is, then go read Passion Unleashed, you’ll meet him there.  She also has an excerpt available here at her site.

If you’re eagerly waiting for Ava Gray’s Skin Game, then you should check out the excerpt that was posted.  I just found it, so I’m not sure how long it’s been up, but since it’s Aguirre’s new paranormal romance, I will be reading it post haste.  Although, has anyone heard what the series title is going to be?

Where have I been and how long has this been out?  Has anyone else seen the cover for Karen Marie Moning’s Dreamfever?  It’s gorgeous and I so can’t wait for it to come out.  I found it over at Romance Rookie where she has three small excerpts posted – one, two and three.  The fourth installment in the Fever series, Dreamfever will be out August 18, 2009.

Nalini Singh has announced the title for her second Guild Hunter novel.  It will be called Archangel’s Kiss and will be out sometime in 2010.  I don’t think we’ll get it before that since there are two Psy-Changeling books coming out this year.

I know we were just given the first novel in Jory Strong’s Ghostworld series – Ghostland, which is an excellent read) – and Spider Touched doesn’t come out until August 4th, but I’ve found the working title for the third Ghostworld novel.  It’s tentatively titled Healer’s Choice and Jory has a sneak peak up at her website.

The Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal Chapter of the Romance Writers of America have announced the finalist for the Prism Awards.

Check out this article at Publishers Weekly on the rise of the Paranormal Fiction genre.  There’s quite a good discussion on the origins of the paranormal genre and how it so did not start with Stephenie Meyer.

Catherine Karp has an excellent piece of vampire fiction and the impact of traditional folklore that covers over 200 years worth of literature for the Dracula’s Bookshelf section of the Vampire Film Festival, which takes place in New Orleans later this year.

So you may have noticed, but I really don’t do these pieces on the weekend.  What can I say?  I have both my boys home, so my attention is usually elsewhere.  However, if you’re still looking for some greta information, make sure you head over to SciFiGuy on the weekend.  He does these great Weekend Reports and I do generally steal some of the information for the Monday posts – but not all of it, so its definitely worth adding to your RSS feeder.  CONTEST ALERT – and FYI, he has a bunch of contests posted over there.

Chloe Neill had some good news recently.  She announced on her blog that books three and four in her Chicagoland Vampires series were picked up by Penguin and we’ll get to see them. No word yet on estimated publication dates, but I just finished reading Some Girls Bite and I can tell you that I am anxiously awaiting all of the future books in this series.

Here’s the first round of new covers: Rachel Vincent’s has My Soul to Take (August 1, 2009) and My Soul to Save (TBA); Chloe Neill’s Firespell (TBA); and Yasmine Galenorn’s Bone Magic.

Lilith Saintcrow announced on her blog that Betrayals, the follow-up to her young adult novel Strange Angels is now available for pre-order on Amazon. It has a November release date.

I so didn’t know that Strange Angels by Lilith Saintcrow was the beginning of a new series, but the second novel, Betrayals, is already available for preorder at Amazon.  It has a release date of November 17, 2009.

If you’re looking forward to the new Vampire Diaries television show based on the books by LJ Smith, then you might be interested in VampireDiariesOnline.com.  It’s managed completely by the fans, but they are bringing all the latest news they can find on the new show.

Lori Devoti is talking about the differences between Pararnormal Romance and Urban Fantasy over at Romancing the Blog.

Here’s what you missed at Literary Escapism this month:

We have a blurb for Dev’s book – Blaze of Memory.  Nalini Singh has two Psy-Changling novels out this year and we finally get a peak at what she’s planning for Dev.  Nalini has also added a new excerpt for Branded by Fire to her website.  I so cannot wait for this book!

Jeaniene Frost has added an excerpt up for Destined for an Early Grave.  For more excerpt goodness, Jenna Black has posted the first chapter to the next Morgan Kingsley novel, Speak of the Devil.  Anya Bast has posted the excerpt for Witch Fury.

Second Round: Jocelynn Drake’s Dawnbreaker (September 29, 2009); Jim C. Hines’s The Mermaid’s Madness (October 6, 2009); Richelle Mead’s Blood Promise (August 25, 2009); and Ava Gray’s, Skin Game.

Carrie Vaughn is treating us to an inside look into the vampire that is Rick, from the Kitty Norville series.  We can thank Subterraean Press for publishing his story, Conquistador de la Noche, before Kitty even gets to find out.

Awesome news for fans of Lauren Dane.  There’ll be more in her Federation series.  The first two novels – Undercover and Relentless – were spectacular and I’m excited to hear that Insatiable will be out July 2010.

In case you missed it, did you see the trailer for season two of True Blood?

The StatesmanJournal.com had an interesting article on Devon Monk. Within it, we found that the fourth Allie Beckstrom novel, which she’s wrapping up now, will be out sometime in May 2010. Plus the fifth and sixth novels will be following in November 2010 and May 2011.

Spectacular Nalini Singh news.  She’s contracted for FOUR more Psy-Changeling novels!  Singh announced it on her blog and I can’t wait to see who she’s going to be writing about next.  I already know I can’t wait for Branded by Fire to come out July 7th.

I have been hearing speculation about JR Ward’s upcoming novel, Covet, and trying to figure out if we’ve seen any of the angels that are going to be making an appearance.  Well, I came across a post (can’t remember where now) and it mentions that:

It has also been confirmed that the Brothers WILL be making appearances in the series.

And before you get your hopes up, Lassiter is NOT one of the Fallen Angels in Ward’s new series.

ETA: Thank you Nicola from Alpha Heroes for telling me where I found this.  The Covet gossip came from Mandy at Smexy Books, from a chat session that Ward had in May.  There’s even an unconfirmed (but very likely) blurb for Covet posted up at Lovin’ Me Some Romance.

Jeri Smith-Ready now has titles for her first two YA novels.  Shade and Shift will both come out in hardcovers and Shade will be out May 15, 2010.  Shift will follow a year later.

Rachel Vincent announced the title to her third Soul Screamers novel, which will be My Soul to Keep. In more title news, Kelley Armstrong gave us the title to the third Darkest Powers novel.  There isn’t a release date (for either novel), but with Frostbitten coming out in September 29th, I’m guessing The Reckoning will be out sometime early next year.

Third Round: Never After featuring Laurell K Hamilton, Yasmine Galenorn, Marjorie Liu and Sharon Shinn (October 27, 2009); N.K. Jemisin’s The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (February 25, 2010); Katie MacAlister’s Steamed (TBA); and Caitlin Kittredge’s Daemon’s Mark (TBA).

He has also found a little more information on the Never After anthology that will be coming out this fall.  Supposedly, the story that LKH is contributing will be called Can You Bake a Cherry Pie, but no word if it takes place in Merry’s or Anita’s world.  Marjorie Liu also posted the blurb for her short, The Tangleroot Palace.

Caitlin Kittredge has changed the title to her fifth Nocturne City book.  Originally called Spell Bound, it’s not going to be Daemon’s Mark and will be out March 2010.

Sad news for Sherrilyn Kenyon fans. The The Dark-Hunters, Vol. 1 has been pushed back until the end of June due to more art complications.  This also means the second issue, which was going to be published in September, will also be pushed back.  There isn’t a new date for that one however.

Jeaniene Frost has a release date for First Drop of Crimson, a Night Huntress spinoff novel!!  First Drop of Crimson will be released January 26, 2010 and will focus entirely on Spade (aka Charles), Bones trusty friend from his penal colony days.

Talk about a shock.  I go to hit Laurell K Hamilton’s site and it’s had a complete makeover!  It looks awesome.  Seriously, I love the theme.  There does seem to be a few kinks yet, but the navigation has been improved a lot.  Blood Noir is out in paperback if anyone is looking for it.

Another new title, Ilona Andrews announced that the title for Kate Daniels 4.  It will be called Magic Bleeds and will be out sometime in June 2010 (or I’m assuming since I haven’t seen talk about it for this month).  For those who were confused (like me I’ll admit), Magic Mourns is actually her novella for Must Love Hellhounds, which features Andrea and Raphael, and is due out in September.  There is a snippet of Magic Mourns available up at Ilona’s website.

Is everyone familiar with the Bookworms Carnival?

The aim of the Bookworms Carnival is to build the community of book bloggers. You don’t have to have a books blog to participate, though; bloggers are welcome to submit any post relevant to the current theme from any blog.

The Bookworms Carnival is held twice a month.

This is a great community event and if you haven’t stopped by one yet, you really should.  The whole point of the carnival is to help build the book blogging community and to promote each others sites.  It’s really easy to join a carnival – all you have to do is email a link to a review you’ve already written for your own site to the current host by the deadline.  If you want to check out other past editions, click here.  The next carnival features Paranormal Fiction and submissions can be sent to bookwormscarnival AT gmail DOT com by June 12th.

Angie Fox has leaked out the titles to books 3 and 4 of her Accidental Demon Slayer series.  A Tale of Two Demon Slayers and The Last of the Demon Slayers (respectively) with one more book coming out before the series ends.

Twilight news, we have a new pic for New Moon.  And UPI.com is reporting that Robert Pattinson has said at the Cannes Film Festival that there will be a movie for Breaking Dawn and that he will be playing Edward in it.  And, the Sisterhood of the Trampoline Pants has a couple more movie posters for New Moon that are just as good as the one I’m showing.

And speaking of movie vampires, JustJared.com has a look at the upcoming CW television series The Vampire Diaries, which is based on the same novels by LJ Smith.

Fourth Round: Alexandra Ivy’s Darkness Unleashed (November 3, 2009); Carole Nelson Douglas’s Vampire Sunrise (November 24, 2009); and Marjorie Liu’s The Fire King (July 28, 2009).

Finally there is some news on the anthology Dark and Stormy Knights.  Another great collection being edited by PN Elrod, she confirmed that everything is a go and the release is scheduled for some time in 2010.  The amazing authors involved in this collection are: Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Shannon K. Butcher, Rachel Caine, P.N. Elrod, Deidre Knight, Vicki Petterson, Lilith Saintcrow, Carrie Vaughn, so it’s one you really want to keep an eye out for.  Carrie Vaughn has already given us an idea to her short story – it’ll involve Cormac and I’ve been soo wanting more of him.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying there’s reports of another Buffy movie in the works.  The only thing is that neither Whedon or any of the original Buffy members will be a part of it.  They are talking about doing something like Star Trek did and focus on a whole new line of slayer.  I’m not sure how I feel about Whedon not being involved.  Buffy is his even if he doesn’t hold the rights to it (and I so didn’t know that).

Larissa Ione has added an excerpt for her story, Eternity, which will be coming out in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 on September 21, 2009.

The Supernatural Summer Tour involves five excellent YA authors.  If you want a chance to see Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, Melissa Marr, Claudia Gray and Aprilynne Pike all in one place (well, not all at once, but at least 3 of them), then got hit the tour schedule because now is your chance.  I will be at the Dayton, OH signing tonight and I so can’t wait.

About Jackie 3282 Articles
I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Hi Jackie! The Covet gossip came from Mandy at Smexy Books, from a chat session that Ward had in May.

Oooo – is that a new Dirk and Steele from Liu? I have mixed feelings about the Hunter Kiss book(s), but I love me the D/S (heh) books.

  2. That is a new D&S novel by Liu. That hasn’t been spread around the net yet? Liu was one of the authors added to my monthly search and I thought it was out there already. Sweet!

Thank you for the source. I couldn’t remember where I came across that Covet gossip!

  3. The news about Fire King probably has spread around, Jackie, but I’ve been a little preoccupied lately. I’m buried in the SM Stirling Dies the Fire series (crazy stuff — I’m having post-apocalyptic dreams!) and having sort of a budget crunch so I’m making some progress on the old TBR pile, too.
