Guest Author: Melissa Stevens

Melissa StevensI am excited to welcome author Melissa Stevens, who is currently writing the sequel to her debut novel, Change.

A sudden life threatening injury turns Nickie’s world on its ear, but not in a way she ever would have predicted. Nickie finds out that not only do shape-shifters exist, but she is one. The Kitsune are a race of shape-shifters that have been living in secret alongside humans for centuries. As Nickie struggles to master her newly discovered shape-shifting and the abilities it brings her, she learns that some of the people in her life are far more than she knew. Can Nickie handle all the changes headed her way on her own? Or does she have someone who can help her?

Are you intrigued? If so, Melissa has a novella, Escape, set in her Kitsune series that is currently free on Amazon.

First off, I want to thank Jackie for having me here at Literary Escapism, I’ve been reading her for a couple of years now and to be offered a visit has thrilled me to my toes!

For those of you who may not be familiar with my work, I write the Kitsune series. The Kitsune are a species of shape-shifters living secretly among us. Unlike werewolves, their shifting isn’t tied to the moon, and their animal forms aren’t limited to wolves.

Starting with Change the books take place slightly in the future, actually about 15 years from now. There are small differences from what we know now, mainly with technology, but I do my best to use real locations, mostly places I’m at least somewhat familiar with.

I know that most people who haven’t been to Arizona think of it as hot sand, desert and sun bleached cattle skulls, but there’s so much more to our beautiful state. I try to show my readers some of that, from the mountains to the desert and everything in between.

Have you ever noticed that most paranormal romance (at last what I’ve been reading) has a mostly urban setting? Cities, and crowded places? I can think of a few exceptions, but not many! While these locations offer a lot of people to interact with and a rich pool for victims, I feel they lack a lot too. I grew up in a small town – population under 900, and I’ve noticed that much of what I read these days lacks the sense of community that is often found in more rural areas.

While Change and Fight aren’t set in a town quite that small, I’ve tried to include that sense of community in the story. The relationships between those who may only be acquaintances, but still do what they can for their neighbor and the tighter knit groups of friends, family and extended family are important in smaller communities, and I try to let that show.

If you’re like me and you like the small town atmosphere, or you just want to see what Arizona is really like, try out the Kitsune series. It may surprise you.

Meet Melissa Stevens!

Melissa was born and raised in Arizona, she’s spent her entire life living across the southern half of the state. She’s found that along with her husband and three children, she prefers the small towns and rural life to feeling packed into a city.

She started reading at a very young age, and her love for series started early, as the first real books she remembers reading is the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Through the years she’s found that there’s little she won’t read, and her tastes vary from westerns, to romance, to sci-fi / fantasy and Horror.

She’s been writing since 2009, and enjoys nearly every minute of it. Currently all her work is available exclusively in ebook.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
