I’m excited to welcome Esri Rose to Literary Escapism today.  We’re celebrating the release of Esri’s Stolen Magic that came out TODAY (have you been to a bookstore yet?) and talking about elves in our hometown.

We’ll be giving a copy of Stolen Magic to a lucky commenter, so make sure you stick around.

Hello, Literary Escapism…um, -ites? However you refer to yourselves, it’s a pleasure to be here. It turns out that romance novels, instead of slumping in a challenging economy, are actually doing better than ever, and paranormal romance is huge. I’m grateful to be writing about Elves, and not the cookie-baking or toy-making kind.

I freely admit that the hero of my first Elves in Boulder book, Bound to Love Her, was inspired by Orlando Bloom as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings movie. I even bought an action figure with actual action: i.e:, when you squeeze his legs together, he shoots off his bow (hur-hur). But in my second book, Stolen Magic, I wanted to tell the story of a female elf. Here’s the blurb.

In a world where humans are displacing elves in alarming numbers, Adlia spends her days working at elf headquarters. But with no artistic talent of her own, and orphaned too young to have known her parents, Adlia is an outsider even among her own elven kind. Only Mark, her human photography instructor, sees that beneath her sarcastic humor lies a vulnerable soul – and a desirable young woman.

But while relationships with humans are pleasurable, they’re also complicated, as Adlia is about to discover. For somewhere between her mind-blowing first human kiss and falling in love, a mysterious memory loss strikes the elf population. Adlia must save her people and herself before she forgets everything. If she succeeds, she may solve an important piece of her personal puzzle and find that Mark fits perfectly.

If you’d like to read the first chapter, you can find it here.

It’s interesting setting a paranormal book in your own town. The places I enjoy turned out to be places my Elves enjoy. As the release date for Stolen Magic approached, I approached the businesses featured in the book and asked if they wanted to be part of a big ol’ promotion. And I must have worn the right clothes and not had anything in my teeth, because they did. That’s how the ElvesInBoulder Giveaway was born.

Starting today, this very minute, you can go to ElvesInBoulder.com and enter to win two big prizes. One can be mailed (artwork, jewelry, body care), and the other is all stuff in Boulder, but because it includes three nights at the Boulder Outlook Hotel (that’s where all the cool Elves stay), plus restaurant meals, theater tix and a gift certificate to my favorite boutique, you might consider it a cheap vacation. All you have to do is get here.

You might also want to sign up for my newsletter, because there may be more ways to enter over the course of the two months, and you can increase your odds of winning if you know what they are. Don’t worry about getting bunches of email from me. I’m too swamped to have time for that. It’s just the essentials.

Thanks for letting me visit today. It’s wonderful to talk to people who appreciate the unusual and mysterious. If you write, keep writing. If you read, keep reading. And if you have pointy teeth, pointy ears, or a little extra body hair, come and see me sometime.

Esri Rose writes Elven paranormal romantic-suspense with a dash of humor. The first book in her Elves in Boulder books is Bound to Love Her, released in May 2008. Esri lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband and her cat, only one of whom has pointy ears. Visit her main site/blog at ElvesAmongUs.com, and her Giveaway site at ElvesInBoulder.com.

Reviews
“I enjoyed Stolen Magic so much, I devoured it in one night!” — Kerrelyn Sparks, NYT Bestselling author

“I loved Stolen Magic. Who knew an elf could kick butt? Esri Rose’s Adlia is a great character, strong, powerful, and wise beyond her years.” — Jeanne C. Stein, The Anna Strong Chronicles

“Adlia and her crew are fierce, magical and very much human in their emotions and wishes. Each character is unique in his or her attitudes and personalities, simply adding to their quirky crew. This book weaves together the many stories of two races learning to adapt to each other’s way of life, yet trying to still remain as secret as possible. It’s in a league of its own!” — 4 Stars for Stolen Magic, May Romantic Times BookReviews

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Elves in my hometown? I’m awfully close to San Francisco so there’s bound to be spillover. But I’ll have to check out the ears on the local tennis-club-trophy-wives and PTA-terrier-moms.

Big congrats on Stolen Magic! I can’t wait to pick up a copy.

  2. Hi, Jane! Hey, your question about elf appearance/manifestation is finally going to be answered on another upcoming blog — Romance Bandits, May 22.

  3. I wish we had elves in my town but as most of our town is reclaimed swamp and can get covered when the king tides roll in they would have to be very hardy little souls or very good swimmers. Are there aquatic elves?

  4. Of course there are elves in my town. I know because we have Christmas lights up all year downtown. It’s very sparkly, like Lothlorien!. Either that or it’s sort of tacky. But I prefer to think of it as the work of elves.

Pssst, Esri: I’m gonna guess “Literary Escapists.” Sounds good to me!

  5. LiJuun: Literary Escapists… Of course!

Bec: In my fictional universe, Elves have trouble maintaining form if they merge with water. But maybe I should introduce some naiads. Hmmm…!

  6. Elves in my town? Doubt any would want too, my town is so small, blink when you drive through and you might miss it.lol.

  7. Since Elves are linked to nature I know we have some in Texas. I have never met any but would love to =)
