Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh

NSingh-Archangel's Storm

NSingh-Archangel's StormI love the Guild Hunter’s series by Nalini Singh and was looking forward to Jason’s book, Archangel’s Storm, and finding out the backstory on such a quiet, powerful and well…unknown angel. Archangel’s Storm is oh so good and you get to learn about Jason and why he is who he is today.

With wings of midnight and an affinity for shadows, Jason courts darkness. But now, with the Archangel Neha’s consort lying murdered in the jewel-studded palace that was his prison and her rage threatening cataclysmic devastation, Jason steps into the light, knowing he must unearth the murderer before it is too late.

Earning Neha’s trust comes at a price—Jason must tie himself to her bloodline through the Princess Mahiya, a woman with secrets so dangerous, she trusts no one. Least of all an enemy spymaster.

With only their relentless hunt for a violent, intelligent killer to unite them, Jason and Mahiya embark on a quest that leads to a centuries-old nightmare… and to the dark storm of an unexpected passion that threatens to drench them both in blood.

I loved getting to know Jason and to read his story.  The heartache he experienced as just a small angel-child explains more of the why he is the way he is…that quiet, emotionally-closed vampire.  You finally get to see him, understand him, and there is character growth.  Just don’t expect him to suddenly be all emotional or gooey-eyed and mooning over the woman he chooses, because you’ll be disappointed.  That isn’t to say Jason isn’t tender with her or doesn’t obviously care for her. He does, but he shows it in his own way.  I didn’t mind that at all, to do anything else, in my honest opinion would not have been true to his character, to who he is.

One should be aware that there are several shifting POVs within Archangel’s Storm.  The story is mainly about Jason, but you do get several glimpses through Dmitri’s eyes; you’ll see what is currently happening with Dmitri and Honor throughout Archangel’s Storm. There are also a couple of times you get a glimpse of happenings through Raphael’s eyes. However, I was slightly bothered by so many POVs.  I expect to have POVs from both the hero (Jason) and Mahaiya (heroine), but because there are so many POVs, the story sometimes felt like there was too much going on for just one book. Like Nalini was doing some major data-dumping in an effort to further the overall series story arc.  Of course the furthering of the series story arc is necessary and Nalini does do this with Jason and Mahaiya’s POVs, so I’m not 100% sure if I believe the other POVs needed to occur to achieve this goal.  I would have preferred a short story or novella as a way to get some of the additional information we get from other characters so that we could have had more time with Jason.

So Guild Hunter fans, be ready. Things are shaking up within this world Nalini has created.  There are some pretty big revelations that occur in Archangel’s Storm that whisper of big things to come in the future books. I know I am excited to see what continues to unfold and how some of my favorite angels deal with this new information they’ve learned from events in Archangel’s Storm.  Happy reading!
