Guest Author: Tamara Hogan

Tamara HoganI am excited to welcome author Tamara Hogan to Literary Escapism today.  Tamara has just released the second novel in her Underbelly Chronicles series, Chase Me.

HE SECRETS SHE’S UNCOVERING WILL BE HIS TO KEEP…
Centuries ago, when their ship crashed to Earth, paranormals of all types settled secretly into our world, quietly going about their business with humans none the wiser. Self–ruling and careful to stay below the radar, all is threatened when Valkyrie archaeologist Lorin Schlessinger and her werewolf geologist partner Gabe Lupinsky inadvertently draw evil attention to Earth and its treasured natural resources.

As the threat intensifies, Lorin and Gabe struggle to contain the chaos they’ve unleashed, and to resist their explosive mutual attraction…

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a copy of Chase Me.

Literary Escapism asked: “Were there any particular legends or lore that inspired your idea of a werewolf?”

Short answer? No, not particularly. ;-)

I grew up in northern Minnesota, and have more than a passing acquaintance with wolves—timberwolves, in particular. Back when I was young, during winters when the snow was really deep and food was scarce, the wolves would sometimes come into the city limits, alone and in packs, to forage for their next meal. Though they usually hit up the garbage cans, it wasn’t unheard of for small dogs to simply…disappear. Needless to say, we didn’t let our toy poodle outside to do his business unattended.

I started developing The Underbelly Chronicles’ werewolves—and the Lupinsky family in particular— with a question: what would happen if a wolf had significant health problems? What would happen if it was extremely near-sighted? In the ruthless wild, that wolf would die—survival of the fittest and all. In captivity, that wolf would survive, but be dependent upon human caretakers for survival and sustenance. What if you were a wereshifter, a mixture of human and wolf, able to shift at will? What would that wolf’s options be? In Gabe Lupinsky’s case, it means he doesn’t shift very often. No one makes eyeglasses for wolves, nor has anyone figured out a way for surgical correction to bridge a shift. He feels stuck in his human skin, set apart from his kind—but at least he has all of his limbs, unlike his mother and his sister. In his human form, he’s capable and productive, and very good at his work.

Then he’s diagnosed with macular degeneration. Even in human form, his vision is deteriorating.

He’s just coming to terms with the news when a work emergency arises: his professional nemesis, Lorin Schlessinger, a Valkyrie, has just made what could be the find of the millennium at the remote northern Minnesota archaeological dig she and her family have worked for decades. Secrecy and discipline are sorely needed, and their boss wants Gabe on-site to supplement some gaps in Lorin’s skillset.

Between frost warnings, heat advisories, ticks, mosquitoes, and pine sap, spending the summer camping in northern Minnesota is the last thing city-boy Gabe wants to do. He knows he’ll spend the summer yearning for what he can’t have… to shift and run with the other wolves, and for Lorin, the woman who’s so far out of his league it isn’t even funny.

  1. Thanks for a great post and giveaway!

    LOL… There isn’t a question…

Congrats on the new release! I love these covers and I just got Taste Me and I’m very excited to start it :)

  2. Hi there! Sorry I’m so late checking in today. I was at a workshop for my day job today, and it turns out that the facilitator was – um – very serious about “no laptops in the classroom!”

Looks like there’s no question. How about this one…how dependent are you upon your gadgets or technology? If someone told you you couldn’t access email or Facebook all day long, how would you react?

  3. I’m pretty dependent on my technology, I wouldn’t like it if I couldn’t use my iPhone all day, but I think I’d survive. I’d just be really busy as soon as I got a chance to get connected again. :D

  4. Barbara, I have to admit that I like taking technology vacations occasionally – though I prefer it to be a time of my choosing! But my employer actually got their money’s worth out of sending me to this training because I wasn’t distracted. No ringing phones, no one tapping and swiping at iPads…how nice to actually focus on one thing at a time! It kind of felt like a luxury. And the world didn’t come to an end because I was incommunicado for eight hours. ;-)

  5. While I could do it, I would not be happy about it. I have to admit I am pretty dependent. Even when I move the first thing I set up is the internet.

  6. Donna, I know what you mean! I’ll be going to a cabin in a couple of weeks where there’s barely electricity, much less internet. It feels very odd.

  7. I really liked the questions you looked at in creating your characters. I’ve always seen werewolves as strong and almost invincible creatures so it’s interesting when you look at things that pose a threat to them.

I am dependent on technology to an extent but sometimes I feel like stepping back and communicting in person. It’s nice to take things slow and enjoy a person’s company in person.
