Blood and Silver by James R. Tuck

JTuck-Blood and SilverI want you to close your eyes, and imagine for a minute with me. Think of every scary bump in the night beast you can imagine, don’t be shy, go on, imagine it.  Now I want you to picture a big, tattoo covered, bad-ass bounty hunter with weapons in every shape and size fighting tooth and nail with them.  Can you see everyone?  Good.  Welcome to Blood and Silver by James R. Tuck my friends.  You will not have one second of boredom with this book and all the scary bad guys that is inside.  Trust me.

Deacon Chalk normally has no trouble telling innocent victims from real monsters. So protecting an abused pregnant were-dog is a no-brainer…until a vicious lycanthrope leader and his brotherhood target Deacon, other shape-shifters, and any humans in their way. Suddenly, Deacon is outnumbered, outgunned, and unsure who – or what – to trust. The only edge he has left is a weapon hungry for his soul and his most savage impulses. And using it will exact a price even this hell-raising hunter fears to pay…

When Blood and Silver was sent to me, I had the hardest time not picking it up.  I had other books to read that had deadlines, so sadly it had to wait.  Then reading Spider’s Lullaby by James R. Tuck made things worse because I still had a couple books in front of Blood and Silver to read.  Then I hit my limit, I couldn’t read another book.  There wasn’t enough action or suspense to keep me interested and entertained.  Nope, Deacon was on my brain and nothing else would suffice.  Once I explained my problem, Jackie told me I could skip right to Blood and Silver and save the other books for later.   I was a happy girl, with my hero kicking monster’s butts novel.

Writing this review is going to be super duper hard, because if I tell you about some of the bad guys it ruins the climatic scenes.  You have no idea how hard it is to retain this information when I wanna scream ‘OMG there was this guy he’s a _____!  How wicked/crazy/cool is that?!?!’.   Believe me, when these characters come walking onto the scene, with their jaws snapping and evil dripping from their razor sharp teeth, you’ll be right where I was.  On the edge of your seat with utter awe that James R. Tuck went there with his imagination.   He pulls out all the stops in the bad guy department.  Where he’s going to go after this I have no clue, but man am I curious to see.

The characters are just as amazing as ever.  Blood and Silver was an emotional roller coaster ride.  I was chewing my nails when everyone got hurt, and let me tell you these weren’t little scrapes or broken bones, they get HURT.  I won’t say more.   I had tears and I was almost afraid to keep reading.  I was grinning like a fool when Deacon and Tiff had a moment, totally cheering them on.  All the way down to wishing I could high-five everyone after they kicked butt.  I am a sucker for these characters.

Deacon is starting to come into his own powers, POSSIBLE SPOILER HERE FOLKS- thanks to the angel who saved his life by giving him her blood, years before.  He can heal faster than a human, he’s stronger, he can feel/sense the weres around him, etc because of her blood.  But with this gift, he can do more than just search for lycanthropes and get a taste of what brand they are.  In Blood and Bullets we saw that he could heal with this power, and in Blood and Silver you see him do that and so so much more.  Again cannot tell you…sorry guys.

The new introduction of Sophia, a were-dog, brings a whole new dimension to this world.  Sophia has a HUGE pivotal role that I did not see.  Most of the time she’s a sweet dog and you forget that she’s a person.  When she’s in human form she seems just as sweet and tortured.  She’s been abused and hurt and she’s torn between staying with her people, who hurt her, or staying with Deacon and being safe.  He makes the decision for her, protecting her every step of the way.  I hope we get to see more of her, I really liked her part in Blood and Silver and I know there is more of her story!

The plot took twists and turns that I didn’t see coming.  I would LOVE to go into detail and tell you what I mean but I can’t, it would completely and irrevocably ruin the entire book for you.  Everything was fast paced, on the edge of no return, exciting, scary and so much more.  You have plenty of fighting, and I’m talking about gritty, dirty, bloody fighting that people have to be dragged away to safety each time.  You have romance among all the fighting which is a nice reprieve and a moment to catch your breath.  You see the characters grow and evolve and you are right there with them through their pain and fear.  You have a mystery of why these bad guys have come to town, you think its one thing but at the end, you learn it’s something else entirely.  I think Blood and Silver was even more exciting than Blood and Bullets, although I hate to say it because that one is in my top favorite books EVER and I don’t want to hurt its feelings.

One quote that I did write down (I was too busy reading to write down any others sorry) sums up how this book affected me “when a sledgehammer with claws knocked me ass over teakettle across the ground’.  The creatures he introduces, the violence that occurs, the agony and pain, the love, all of it, knocked me ass over teakettle, LOL.

Don’t walk, RUN out and buy Blood and Silver when it comes out on August 7th.  Better yet, go pre-order it right now.  Don’t waste another second.
