Seeker of Shadows by Nancy Gideon

NGideon-Seeker of Shadows

NGideon-Seeker of ShadowsI write this review with misty eyes and an achy heart.  Why?  Because Seeker of Shadows by Nancy Gideon is an evil, evil book, my friends.  It will make you cry and long for a love you can’t have.  It will make your heart skip a beat with passion and in fear.   It will tear you up, spit you out and before you know it, the book is over and you have to say goodbye to all these wonderful characters.  See? It’s pure evil!

His town.
Susanna Duchamps came to New Orleans to settle a debt and to temporarily escape the controlled constraints of her life among the Chosen. What she finds is an opportunity to make miraculous strides with her research into Shifter genetics . . . and an unexpected, but never forgotten, man from her complicated past.

Her rules.
Shifter club owner Jacques LaRoche is fiercely protective of his freedom. Stripped of his memories of a former life, he longs for the mate he lost . . . until the enticingly familiar presence of a mysterious stranger from the north ignites a primal, nearly uncontrollable need to release the untamed beast inside him.

Their last chance.
Susanna dares not tell Jacques it was she who sacrificed his past and her future years ago, to protect him and the secret she carried. But her arrival in New Orleans comes with consequences. When a bloody confrontation erupts between their enemy clans, will she betray her lover once again—or throw her own life on the line so they can finish what they started?

Seeker of Shadows introduces us to a new relationship, one between Jacques and Susanna. Next to Max and Charlotte, Jacques has been one of my favorite characters from this series.  I always get excited when he strolls onto the page and sad when he leaves.  There was something about him that grabbed my attention from the beginning.  It may have been his witty comments or his fierce show of loyalty, I really don’t know other than I had an instant crush.  So seeing that this book was devoted to him, I was all a glow.   He’s just as sweet, caring and funny, yet tough and strong as I thought he was.  He made my heart go pitter-pat with his kindness and killer devotion.   Especially when he vows to protect someone he doesn’t know, even though she’s one of the enemy, just because she’s on his turf.   And now I’m totally in love with him.  So sorry Max, you have competition now buddy.  I liked him before, but now, yeah I’m hopelessly gone and I’m crossing all my crossables that I get another book of him…or three or four…

Jacques has no solid memories of his past, so he creates a new life for himself.  A good life, full of shifters friends, but it isn’t enough to squelch the longing for a life he can’t remember.  It’s gut wrenching to watch him struggle over not knowing who he really is, and then to see how hard he tries to find his way in the world without a foundation to build on.  All the while struggling with this gaping hole inside him that is longing for something/someone he can’t fully remember.  That hole holds him back from really living.  The scenes of his dreams and how it affects him with confusion yet being on the brink of remembering something totally got me.  I just wanted to hug him the whole time.  It tore at my heart strings ya’ll.

And then walked in Susanna, who I liked and didn’t like because she’s a Chosen (the Chosen, the powerful elite of the shape shifters, are hated, because of their cruel, cold hearted, controlling ways).  But she was a surprise in that she isn’t the cold and calculating persona that her kind is known for.  She’s soft, she’s caring, and she has dreams and ambition, but most importantly, feelings.  She is the exact opposite of what the Chosen are.  I think if she wasn’t, I wouldn’t have liked her, and I wouldn’t have connected with her so deeply.  I was in pain with her as she watched Jacques, knowing he was struggling with clouded memories and his strange reaction to her, knowing she couldn’t do a thing about it.  I was in her shoes every time she wanted to touch him or for him to touch her, knowing she couldn’t or she’d risk all she’d sacrificed.  It was terrible.  I was an emotional wreck!

When these two came together, you bet your ass I shouted with joy…which was a great laugh for my family.

I also was hooting and hollering when Charlotte and Max where on stage, heart ripping when they were in danger and the many moments of on the edge of your seat excitement and glimpses into their story….ah man I am so craving more of the two of them.  Of course Silas and Nica were there, which I do love and miss them, too.  Plus Mary Kate, Charlotte’s injured nun friend makes another appearance!  I’m beyond curious about her part in this story; so far, we haven’t seen her all that much in this series but she’s there for a reason.  Now it’s time to wait and see what that is.

As always the plot in Seeker of Shadows is part of a huge web that is connected to the story that began with Masked by Moonlight (book #1 in the Moonlight series) and Charlotte and Max.  Everything that happens in each book of this series, affects the main story line and with the new twist of seeing things happen from the eyes of others, it gives you a better grasp of what is going on and what is about to happen.  Which I’m guessing is going to be a ginormous explosion.  There are so many tidbits in Seeker of Shadows that link back but if I tell you, it spoils everything.  I just can’t.  It is requiring tons and tons of restraint not to.  One thing I guessed, can’t tell you what, but it was hinted at enough that I think it was intentional.  I also expected more of a shoot out in the end than there was, but with how this story wraps up, I’m guessing that story is coming soon.  Other than that, even though these aren’t complaints really, everything was amazingly done and kept me in suspense to the very end.

The world that Nancy Gideon has created is one of the best.  Ever.  I truly cannot get enough.  Each book leaves me anxious for the next and completely frustrated I don’t have it.  With every new novel, I fall more and more in love with these people and miss them like cuhrazy when I don’t see them again in the next book.  Please Ms. Gideon, don’t take too long in getting us the next book.  Seeker of the Shadows is a huge cliff hanger; it just isn’t fair to leave us hanging like this.
