Dead and Gone by C. Harris

The ninth novel in Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, Dead and Gone brings a new story arc (supposedly) as well as a new revelation.

For Sookie Stackhouse, the day to day activities of the vampire and were communities in and around Bon Temps, Louisiana, are of vital interest, She’s blood-bound to the leader of the vamps, a friend to the local were pack, works for a man who is shifter, and has a brother who is a were-panther…

But for most of the humans in Bon Temps, the vamps are mysterious seductive creatures-and they don’t even know about the weres.

Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to follow the lead of the undead and reveal their existence to the ordinary world.

At first it seems to go well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found in the parking lot of the bar where Sookie works. The victim is someone she knows, so she feels compelled to discover who-human or otherwise-did the deed.

I thought From Dead to Worse had wrapped up a lot of loose ends, but did anyone else get the idea that Dead and Gone was doing that as well?  I know there were other things going on in the story, but everything had a nice neat bow at the end.  What I thought was going to be the start to the new story arc, ended up with a bow as well and I’m not really sure what is going to happen next. However, I have a feeling I know what the new arc is going to entail – the weres did have their own Great Revelation after all.

I do have to say that I really can’t wait to see how Harris develops the new Eric and Sookie relationship. I also have to say that I can’t believe what she did to another major player (and I’m not going to say who so I won’t spoil it for anyone), but I’m really hoping this didn’t mean that this character is going to disappear.  Without this character, I think Eric will have it way to easy, if he doesn’t already.  Either way, Eric remembers what happens while he was out of commission during Dead to the World and now he wants to talk about it!  We see such a different side to Eric that it’s fascinating.  I always did prefer him over Bill and after reading Dead and Gone, I can only say that sentiment has been reinforced.

Side note…speaking of our two vampires, now that the Sookie Stackhouse has been made into a television series by HBO, does anyone else feel like the vampires on the book covers are lacking compared to the actors who are portraying them?  I would rather look at Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgård (definitely Skarsgård – yum!) than the two vampires on this cover, that’s for sure.

As for the plot, loved it.  Sookie has definitely grown since we first met her in Dead Until Dark and it really shows in Dead and Gone.  She’s being thrown a couple of curveballs and she not only takes them in stride, but shows that she is not a girl to be messed with.  I know I can’t wait to see what happens to Sookie under the new vampire king and with the were revelation.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novel.  I was going to be a good little girl and wait for it at the library, but after two sessions of lounging in Barnes & Noble with it, I couldn’t resist buying it so I could find out what happens.  Dead and Gone completely grabbed my attention and I’m loving the Sookie Stackhouse series even more.  Fans of the series are going to love it and if you haven’t started it yet, then you really need to.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
