Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog: Act 3

Okay, honestly, I didn’t expect this to end the way it did. So today was the release of the third and final act in Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. While I was watching this, I realized that I forgot the most important thing when watching a Whedon creation…Joss is one evil bastard. This is actually a good thing because what you think is going to happen, does, but not with the results you’re expecting.

Let’s quickly recap. In act one, we’re introduced to Dr. Horrible, Capt. Hammer, and Penny. The three main characters in the film. Dr. Horrible is trying to get into the league of Evil. Capt. Hammer is Dr. Horrible’s arch nemesis and is always around to defeat him. Penny is the girl that Dr. Horrible secretly longs for but is too shy to talk to. At the end of act one, in an attempt to stop Dr. Horrible, Capt. Hammer inadvertently meets Penny. In act two, we see the relationship between Capt Hammer and Penny play out, much to the disgust of Dr. Horrible. In the final act, Dr. Horrible gets his revenge on Capt. Hammer for stealing his girl.

Hopefully, I didn’t give too much away, but that’s the basic idea of the story. I’m not going to say what happens because you still have a good 25 hours to see it, so I don’t want to ruin it for you. But I will say this, Whedon’s sense of humor does come out and his evil trickery is very prevalent. For instance, we finally get to see who Bad Horse is, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t think he was going to look like he did. For one, I wasn’t expecting that. However, I shouldn’t have had any expectation. Whedon is great at giving us what we think we want and then ultimately doing it better by doing something totally different. I have loved his work from Buffy to Angel to Firefly (and Serenity) and all of them have made me cry, curse, and love Whedon at various different points. To come up with that range of emotion in a film is spectacular and Whedon has continued his brilliance with Dr. Horrible. The fact that this was a musical, I think, made it even better. The songs were able to convey more emotion and intent than just words along; and all of the characters had really good singing voices.

Overall, I could go on about Dr. Horrible, but if you haven’t seen it yet, then go do it. It’s really good and it just re-enforces the idea that anything Whedon touches is gold. After seeing this, I can’t wait until Dollhouse (his new televised project) comes out, because I know it has to be good.
