In Rides Trouble by Julie Ann Walker

JAWalker-In Rides Trouble

JAWalker-In Rides TroubleI usually try and read a series in order. However with Julie Ann Walker’s Black Knight series, I’m apparently going backwards.  I started with the third novel, Rev it Up, and then read the second, In Rides Trouble. Oh yeah…it ROCKED. What is it about special ops men? Oh…yeah….they’re alpha and just yummy lol!

Rebel with a Cause
Becky “Rebel” Reichert never actually goes looking for trouble. It just has a tendency to find her. Like the day Frank Knight showed up at her door, wanting to use her motorcycle shop as a cover for his elite special ops team. But Becky prides herself on being able to hang with the big boys-she can weld, drive, and shoot just as well as any of them.

Man with a Mission
Munitions, missiles, and mayhem are Frank’s way of life. The last thing the ex-SEAL wants is for one brash blonde to come within fifty feet of anything that goes boom. Yet it’s just his rotten luck when she ends up in a hostage situation at sea. Come hell or high water, he will get her back-whether she says she needs him or not.

This will be a short and sweet review…otherwise I’ll just be gushing over sexy men lol.  Really and truly the entire Black Knights series is a great blend of contemporary and romantic suspense.  In Rides Trouble does focus on the development of the h/h relationship, and the internal struggles of each that affect them from becoming a couple…but the main antagonistic part of the plot is more romantic suspense. First our heroine is captured by Somalian pirates…and then is being stalked by one who evaded capture and death.  I love romantic suspense novels as they bring that mystery and psychological drama that I miss from my Grisham novel days (which I don’t read anymore since my day job is an attorney…). So adding the RS element to a contemp, the way In Rides Trouble does, gives it a leg up on other contemps.  There is more action, more tension added.

Another element I liked was the pacing. It was quick and easy to follow.  I wasn’t skimming too much which is always a bonus in my world :).  One thing I didn’t particularly like about In Rides Trouble was there was some good buildup regarding this pirate who escaped.   You see him escape, then talking about his plans, to his evil father, in regards to finding Becky and making her pay, so you know he’s gunning for her and it won’t be good/pretty if he finds her.  Then…he does…and that scene is so quick and next thing you know, that whole dynamic is just resolved.  There was only a few moments of panic/tension. I just felt there was all this buildup for not a lot of payoff.  I’m fine with what the resolution was…but there could have been a bit more during the final confrontation sequence, which was the biggest issue I had with In Rides Trouble.

As to our h/h and their relationship…they are soooo stubborn! There were times I wanted to strangle one or both of them. This whole…oh he/she doesn’t see me that way blah blah blah, unrequited love blah blah blah got a bit…much at times. I was so happy (for several reasons) when one of them finally just went for it…consequences be damned! It took long enough!

If you like sexy, military, alpha men…and strong, opinionated women, then you won’t be disappointed with In Rides Trouble.  The h/h are this and so much more. And you’ll love the mix of contemp and RS that In Rides Trouble brings to the reader. All in all…why are you still reading my review? Go on now, my feelings won’t get hurt…read it LOL!

Attorney by day, Publicist for Barclay Publicity and reviewer/LE (assistant) editor by night. I'm a huge book nerd and love to read. I have 2 dogs, both Labrador retriever mixed breeds, who are very rotten and think they run the house. Let's not lie, they totally do, I just can't them know it ha ha! My usual genre is romance or urban fantasy. I love all things having to do with paranormal, with the occasional good contemp/BDSM/erotica thrown in to spice it all up.

  1. I have Rev It Up in my tbr pile, glad to hear the rest of the series is rocking. I was holding off my read to buy books one and two..but at least now I know they can be read out of order.
