Weekly Geeks v9.19: Memorial Day & Summer

This weeks Weekly Geeks theme is all about Memorial Day and the start of Summer.

Option #1:With Memorial Day in the U.S. this coming Monday, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on the military. Either share your favorite book on war or movie on war and why. Provide a clip from the movie if you’d like or a passage from the book that shows us why you it’s your favorite book or movie. Or do both. OR choose your own military theme, for example, if you have a relative or friend in the military and you would like to send them a video or a message of thanks, do that on your blog. OR do all three. The book and movie also don’t have to be “patriotic” necessarily. For example, one of my favorite fictional books on war is Johnny, Get Your Gun by Dalton Trumbo.

Option #2:Again with Memorial Day Weekend here in the U.S. starting traditionally on Friday evening, it also is unofficially the start of summer. You’ve probably been asked this in other meme groups in which you participate, but do your reading habits change over the summer? Do you choose lighter fare? What do you enjoy to take to the beach, for example? What is the ultimate summer book? OR what are your favorite travel guides — official or unofficial guides? Again, an example, I think of Holidays In Hell by P.J. O’Rourke, of places I’d rather not vacation. Along those lines, where do you vacation? Any places you recommend or even don’t recommend?

Mmm….do my reading habits change over the summer?  Normally, I would say no, but aftering thinking about this past week, I’m going to have to rethink that.  At least for the next couple of years.  we started out last summer in an apartment and going out wasn’t the best of options, so Ian and I stayed indoors a lot.  At that time, Ian was happiest as long as I was in the same room with him (and he’s still like that), so I ended up reading a lot while he was playing.  Then we bought the house and we spent as much time as we could outside since we didn’t have to worry about the yard (dog owners who don’t clean up after their animals really bugged me last summer).  Again, Ian was happy to explore and I was left to read.

However, this year, I think that’s going to change.  Now that Ian is two years old, he can do a lot more and he wants to do it all.  He wants to go on walks and play outside and go to the park.  Plus we have a zoo membership, so I can see us going there as often as we can.  I’m thinking my reading habits are going to change this summer because we’ll be busier than we have been in the past and I don’t think it’s going to change until he starts wanting to go over to friend’s houses to play.  So I am going to guess that my reading is going to go down this summer.  Either my reading or my blogging at least.  There is only so much time in the day.

As for what I read during the summer, my tastes really don’t change based on the season.  They are more in line with my moods, and maybe the weather can have some impact on it, but not enough that I notice.  Right now, I have about 40 books sitting on my desk and my goal is to get through them this summer and they are all over the fantasy spectrum.  As for what is the ultimate summer book – whatever I’m currently reading.  I can’t think of any one book that is better in the summer than at any other time.  Maybe I’m overthinking that, but books are books.

As for the first option, I so totally wanted to include a clip of my favorite military movie and television show.  I love Kelsey Grammer’s Down Periscope (not so much a war movie, but definitely military) and I love M*A*S*H (the movie was okay, but television series was so much better).  Honestly, I’m not a fan of war movies, but give me a good war comedy and I am all over it.  McHale’s Navy is another good one and Tim Curry is awesome no matter what he does.  :)  Although, I did just totally forget that McHale’s Navy was a television show and I’ve only seen the movie.  I should really see if it is on Nick at Nite.  I went searching for some good Down Periscope and M*A*S*H clips and here are two that I found:

The first video is from season 1 of M*A*S*H and the episode is Major Tuttle although I can’t tell you what the number is. I have to say, I really enjoy this clip since it mentions my hometown and you really don’t hear anyone talk about Battle Creek very often.

The second video is the trailer Down Periscope.  All I can say is this movie is hilarious and well worth the time.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
