The fourth novel in the Katie Chandler series by Shanna Swendson, Don’t Hex with Texas, takes place a couple of months after Damsel Under Stress and it is just as good as all the others.
Katie Chandler has fled fast-paced Manhattan and returned home to a simpler life, working at her family’s feed-and-seed store in Cobb, Texas. Leaving the sexy wizard Owen Palmer to battle his demons in the magical realm may have been a selfless gesture—after all, Katie seemed to attract evil, which only made Owen’s job a lot harder—but now it seems like trouble has followed her home. Soon Cobb is being plagued by a series of unexplainable petty crimes and other devilish mischief, and after her experiences in Manhattan, Katie knows “unauthorized magic” when she sees it.
In this fourth installment, we don’t see as many of the magical creatures that have appeared before, but we do get to learn more about Katie’s family, which does explain some of her quirkiness. Owen ends up making an appearance in order to help Katie figure out what is going on and Idris, in all his dysfunctional glory, appears again to make their lives a little harder, but that much more amusing. The relationship develops more between Owen and Katie as well as for Katie herself. She begins to see that no matter where she is, she’s going to have to deal with magic because it is everywhere.
This is such a fun series that I’m really hoping that sales go up so the fifth book can be published. After reading Shanna’s website, it seems that she has a fifth book in her head (and possibly on paper??), but people haven’t gotten to books three and four yet, so the publisher is holding off. People need to get out there and buy this series. The quirkiness of Katie’s world is amusing and such a quick read that it leaves you wanting more only there isn’t any yet. I’m curious to see what happens after the events in Don’t Hex with Texas, because a lot of things occur that could make life interesting for Katie in the future.
Overall, go out and buy this book. It’s fun and easy to get into. Swendson builds a world that isn’t much unlike our own and the characters are so engaging that you want to know more. I’m seriously going to head out today and try and find it at Barnes & Noble just so I can help sales go up so book five will get published. Seriously, this is one of those books I would recommend you buy without reading it.

I have only read the first book in this series because I am supposedly getting the next 2 as part of a bookcrossing ring….
I won’t be waiting much longer though…I think I am going to use some Birthday money and treat myself to the rest of this series.
