Deep Sky by Patrick Lee

PLee-Deek Sky

PLee-Deek SkyWhat would you do if you had 24 hours to solve a mystery that’s bigger and more complex than you can imagine, with very little to go on and only a couple of people you can trust to help you, all while the government is hunting you down like a dangerous fugitive?  I know what I would do; I would freak the crap out…considering I kinda freaked out reading just that in Deep Sky by Patrick Lee.  It is a crazy intense Scifi thriller, people!

The anomaly called the Breach is the government’s most carefully guarded secret.
But there is another secret even less known . . . and far more terrifying.

As the U.S. President addresses the nation from the Oval Office, a missile screams toward the White House. In a lightning flash, the Chief Executive is dead, his mansion in ruins, and two cryptic words are the only clue to the assassins’ motives: “See Scalar.”

Now Travis Chase of the covert agency Tangent—caretakers of the Breach and all its grim wonders—along with partner and lover Paige Campbell and technology expert Bethany Stewart, have only twenty-four hours to unearth a decades-old mystery once spoken of in terrified whispers by the long since silenced. But their breakneck race cross-country—and back through time and malleable memory—is calling the total destructive might of a shadow government down upon them. For Travis Chase has a dark destiny he cannot be allowed to fulfill . . .

Heads up folks, Deep Sky is so action packed, you don’t get a break.  You are on constant “OMG what is going on, what is happening next, WILL THEY FIND OUT IN TIME!” mode.  Seriously, I am exhausted from reading what all these poor characters just did.  Now while I love the action and intensity of Deep Sky, I am a bit sad that I didn’t get to know the characters all that much.  I can’t tell you much about Travis other than he’s very smart, he’s dependable, he’s trustworthy, and he’s wicked scary in his ability to kill without emotion.  Paige is just as smart, trustworthy, well trained in combat, etc.  I know that Travis and Paige are a couple but you only see them as a ‘couple’ in the very beginning.  After that it’s all teamwork to figure out what is going on, with very little romantic clues, other than they worry about each other’s safety.  Bethany is, like the others, super smart but her special talent is she’s a whiz at computers.  That’s it really, there’s not much more I can tell you about them or any of the other characters.  Everything happens so fast and with so much going on, there isn’t a lot of character building.  Oddly, with how Deep Sky plays out, that works out just fine.  Too much background and dissecting these characters would have bogged down the story line and it wouldn’t have been as intense.  So, on one hand I’m a little sad that I don’t really know the characters, but on the other hand I think everything played out brilliantly.

I didn’t guess a second of what was was going to happen in Deep Sky.  I knew there would be a cat and mouse game, but that’s as far as I could predict.  In fact the ending through me for a loop!  Deep Sky is science fiction to a “T” my friends, expect the unexpected…and then some.  Most of the time, the characters have zero clue what is going on; they are running on guesses alone.  At times it was confusing and I kept thinking they needed more information to go on, otherwise how could they figure out what to do?  They do end up getting through each mission, but just barely.  It added to the excitement, yes, but there could have been a bit more info to make things easier for the reader (or just me, haha) to grasp what was actually going on.

It also would have been nice for more downtime to get my bearings, because there were a few things that I missed in all the rush.  When I read quickly, I tend to overlook important details.  I ended up missing A TON of information and I had to go back, reread, to find out what was really happening.   I love the story, but I wish the pacing had been a bit slower.  I would have retained the information easier and actually understood what was going on and why it was happening, without having to reread it.  Other than it being too fast paced, Deep Sky had my attention from the start and I could not put it down.

Before I even finished Deep Sky by Patrick Lee, I was telling my friends they had to read it ASAP.  It’s an intense, action packed thriller of crazy science fiction proportions and everyone should check it out.   With it being the last in the Travis Chase Trilogy, there’s a lot of information I am missing. You need to start with book #1.  I suppose I must read the other two books to get caught up…oh the torture *grin*.
