How To Marry A Warlock in 10 Days by Saranna DeWylde

SDeWylde-How to Marry a WarlockAfter seeing the covers and blurbs for Saranna DeWylde’s 10 Days series, I really wanted to read them and I finally got a chance to pick up a copy of How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days, which comes out on the 25th. It was a good thing I was looking for a light and fun romp because that’s exactly what I got.

Got Warlock?

Middy Cherrywood does. She’s got more warlock than she can hex with Dred Shadowins. He isn’t just a billionaire playboy and Weekly Warlock centerfold. He’s a spy for the High Chancellor, and he convinces Middy to pose as his fiancée for his latest mission. Too bad no one told his mother before she slipped Middy a potion that will make their sham engagement all too real in just ten days.

Dred Shadowins already has his hands full with cursed objects, possessed nuns, and dreams where Merlin makes him pay for taking his name in vain by relating his sexcapades with Nimue. But by the end of the mission, he’s convinced his most difficult challenge is the hero’s cape Middy’s draped over his shoulders. Because he wants nothing more than to give her the one thing he may not be capable of providing: Happily Ever After.

In a nutshell, How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days is a fun little romance involving a warlock and witch who know what they want, things just don’t happen the way they expected them to. Considering the story as a whole, How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days was a fabulous read that kept me glued to the pages all weekend. It was hilarious, heart-wrenching and just all around a fun read. However that’s not to say I didn’t have a few issues.

First of all, I really don’t get the “in 10 days” aspect of the title. That never really seemed to be an issue for this couple as Dred and Middy seem to just get thrown together and were happy with that. That’s a minor thing, but I do feel kind of cheated that it wasn’t more of an issue for their relationship.  Dred and Middy had an entirely too easy courtship. I really don’t want to give anything away, but considering Middy didn’t like Dred at the beginning, she capitulated really easy where he was concerned. Not only that, but there was never a moment where them ended up as a couple was really in question. How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days is a paranormal romance, so a HEA shouldn’t be a surprised, but I wanted a more rocky road. There wasn’t one. With that aside, watching the two together was entertaining, so while I do feel like their chemistry was never tested, it really didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment of them as a couple.

Should I talk about them individually. Not really. They were a cute couple – fun to watch, amusing to see what antics they got involved with – but honestly I just don’t care enough about them individually. For one, aside from the name Middy, how is this chick still a virgin with how sex crazed she is? Casey has this thing about the word “moist”, after reading How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days, I now have a thing about the word “muffin”. If you’re going to be so obsessed with sex, use the freaking words.

As for a plot, there is one, but it’s a little loose. There are two villains, but one of them is kind of WTF? I get the motivations for one, but the other is still a total mystery. It’s almost like DeWylde wanted to have partners as villains, but what their connection was to each other, and why the other one wanted in, was never really explained. Especially considering who one of the villains is. I will say, while it was loose, there was a really nice solid base. I like the fact that I didn’t see everything right out of the gate. I had some perceptions early on, but they ended up being wrong. In all consideration, the plot did exactly what it was suppose to do – get our couple together and keep them moving – I just would have liked to see it a little more flushed out.

Overall, How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days by Saranna DeWylde was a fun paranormal romance. I was engaged with what was going on the whole time and the side characters really added to the story. In fact, I’m really curious to see more of how the whole pantheon (or powers that be) works for this series.  I haven’t read How To Lose a Demon in 10 Days yet, but if it’s anything like How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days, I may just have to get it sooner rather than later.  Fans of Kimberly Raye’s Dead End Dating and Katie MacAlister’s Aisling Grey series will definitely enjoy How to Marry a Warlock in 10 Days (and I’m guessing the series as a whole).
