School’s In: Karen Mahoney & Moth (Contest)

Karen Mahoney

Schools In (200px)It’s that time of year again. Everyone is going back to school and so is Karen Mahoney’s Marie ‘Moth’ O’Neal from Falling to Ash.

You can’t choose your family… living or dead.

Trapped between two very different worlds, newly made vampire Moth is struggling to find her place in either. Not only does she have to answer to her strict Irish-Catholic Dad, but her over-protective maker, Theo, is intent on making her the star attraction in his powerful Boston vampire clan. Moth will have to pull off the double-act of the century to please both of them…

Adding to her problems is the dangerously attractive Jason Murdoch, a trainee vampire hunter who loves to play cat and mouse in his spare time (Jace = cat; Moth = mouse). But when the teenagers of Boston’s wealthiest families start to disappear, it forces Moth and Jace into an uneasy truce. Will they be able to solve the mystery behind the disappearances—before someone winds up undead?

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a signed copy of Falling to Ash.

No Graduation Day For Me by Marie ‘Moth’ O’Neal

KMahoney-Falling to AshMy first week at UMass (Boston) is kind of a blur.

I’m not sure if I don’t remember it so well because I was overwhelmed with all the new people and places and activities – the perceived freedom from my strict Irish Catholic family – or because between then and now… well… I sort of died.

I mean, I didn’t stay dead. Obviously. Otherwise I wouldn’t be talking to you now. But being half-drained of blood and then brought back as a vampire will play tricks with your memory. Trust me, you should probably take my word for that.

I don’t recommend it.

Where was I? Oh, yeah… My first week of school. I’m talking about Art School here, not high school. Eighteen years old and full of dreams. My big dream? That’s easy – I wanted to draw comic books. Superheroes! I love Catwoman and Wolverine. Something about the sharp claws and teeth, maybe… But I would have been just as happy to go into the animation industry. Or gaming. So long as I could use my fledgling artistic talents, I think I would’ve been okay. Drawing was always the thing I did to escape.

The only thing I’m drawing on a regular basis now is blood.

So, last year I got to spend a few weeks doing something that truly fulfilled the artistic side of me before everything changed. And it was also during those precious weeks that I met the man who would be the cause of all that change: my Maker, Theo.

I guess, now that I think about it, there’s something kinda creepy about a (nearly) two-hundred-year-old vampire hanging out at UMass, but it wasn’t like he was posing as a student or anything. That would’ve been totally cliché.

It’s also a whole other story.

Still, the fact remains, Theo was there. He saw me and I reminded him of someone; someone special to him, once upon a time.

I saw him and was swept away by the first love of my life. Also, I liked the fact that dating an older guy would traumatize my family.

(Clearly the freaking joke was on me, because I didn’t realize how much older he really was!)

Romance, kissing, blood… It’s a familiar tale, and one that I wish I had never been a part of.

But it all started – and ended – with school, where I got the education of a potentially very long lifetime.

Sincerely,
Moth

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Thanks for a great post! I remember my first crush :) I was in the 4th grade and he was a 6th grader. I remember being obsessed with him! lol…

  2. I remember I had a crush on a boy I knew from kindergarten through second grade. Nothing much ever came of it since we moved away, but I remember he was a lot of fun to be around.

  3. I do! He was a senior and I was in my first year of high school. I remember following him around and always from far away with my friends. Lol.

  4. I was in sixth grade but I kept it to myself. It didn’t overtake me or anything like that but I was always aware when he was around

  5. This was a great post! Really loved that Moth is into drawing/animation/vide game. My first crush was in 2nd grade and the boy ignored me. So I think I kicked him ‘accidentally’ in a game of kickball. Ahh, school crushes. I kinda hate them now XD.

  6. It was fourth grade and he was one of the troublemakers. I can’t even remember his name. I’ve always been insanely shy, especially when it comes to crushes, so I’m sure he just thought I was the weird quiet girl that left class once a week (our elementary gifted program was a once a week things).

  7. My first school crush was in the 8th grade when I had a total crush on my homeroom teacher. I thought he was so cool, he drove a sports car and everything.

  8. We were both six years old. He usually played with my big brothers but when they weren’t around, I followed “Bobby Debilzen” everywhere like a devoted puppydog. And he let me. His sandbox or mine. My favorite playtime was building a little house in the huge lilac bushes that framed my backyard. We would make pretend “pies” out of the choke cherries…… ahhh… good memories….

  9. Don’t really remember who it was or the details but I probably had my first crush in grade school.

I do remember emphatically telling a babysitter that boys were disgusting and I’d never like them. She ended up winning that round!

  10. My first crush had to have been when I was ten and lasted until I was sixteen…he was really nice and I even when to junior prom with him…I remember thinking this is it, but we ended up being better friends then anything more!

  11. My first crush was in reception. I met him again a few years ago and he told his wife that I was the first girl he ever kissed – I do not remember this at all!

  12. my first school crush was on a guy that made me so tongue tied.. i remember dancing with him in fourth grade… and i got all mixed up and tried putting my arms around his waist.. lol

  13. I had a crush with a boy who was two years older than me. He wanted to keep our relationship secret because of shame that I was younger but I really liked and did not say anything for a long time. But one day I found the courage and I left him.
    Many tears!

  14. The first one I remember was in junior high and he was a couple of years younger than me; a lot of girls thought he was hot (well, hot for a junior high school boy, anyway). A friend of mine ended up going out with him for a while.
