Weekly Geeks v9.20-21: Guilty Pleasures & Summer Fun

I’ve had last weeks theme open on my laptop all week and I’m just now getting to it, so I’m including it with this week and the two kind of go together.

Last week, Ali wanted to know what our guilty pleasures are and this week Chris wants to know:

  1. Make a reading list of your favorite children’s (school aged) books to read over the summer.
  2. Give us some fun activities to do during the summer.
  3. Tell us about a favorite vacation spot. Maybe someone will want to go there too!
  4. Tell us about a favorite summer memory you have of being a kid (the time you caught the big one, learning to swim, summer camp, etc).

The first one is really easy.  My guilty pleasure has always been reading, but if you ask my husband, he’ll say it’s him.  :)  Seriously though, reading has always been my biggest weakness, vice and troublemaker.  I was the kid who got grounded from reading because I did it too much; the one who always has one and was usually buried in it instead of doing what everyone else is doing.  It may not sound like a Guilty Pleasure, but when I think of anything that I enjoy doing A LOT, it’s reading and I usually feel guilty when I’m buying my seventh book at the store for the month and it’s the third one I’m going to try sneaking past my husband.  I’m always trying to slide books in under his nose.  So last weeks theme was really easy for me and maybe that’s why I had a hard time trying to fit in time to write this up.

As for this week, I love summer.  There is just something about it that makes everything looke cleaner and my kitchen even more of a mess than what it is.  This is about the time when I get into my “this place is getting clean AND staying cleaned!” and go on a rampage getting everything sparkling.  Strangely, I actually find cleaning during the summer fun.  A bright sunny summer day, the windows wide open, the music blaring and some good floor cleaner in hand.  There’s just something about that combination that I like seeing.  Am I weird?  :)

My son, Ian, is also two this summer and we’re having a blast exploring.  One of our all time favorite summer activities is heading to the park and going down the slide and swinging.  We actually found something exciting today when we ventured to a new park for the first time – free train rides.  Ian has been going nuts on Thomas the Tank Engine so he was all about the trains.  We took one ride and as soon as his foot touched the ground, he was off running to get in line again.

Another favorite activity (at least for me and I’m hoping will be Ians) is the zoo.  I love being able to walk around the Detroit Zoo and watch all the various animals.  There’s always something amusing going on, plus there’s a great play structure for Ian to lose some energy on.

And ultimately, I love sitting outside with a good book.  Sitting in the sun, watching Ian playing with any of his various toys (and not trying to spray me with the hose), with the music blaring – it’s just perfect.  As long as it’s not hot and humid.  :)

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. That does sound like a great day. My son Patrick is two as well, but it’s winter here, so lots of inside time.
    Happy Weekly Geeks :)

  2. Are you weird? About the floor cleaning, I have to say… HELL YEAH! And, please come visit me.

I got grounded from reading once but it didn’t work — my room was full of books. I did get in trouble all the time for having my books open inside of my schoolbooks. I think what made the teachers the maddest is that I still answered every question right even when I wasn’t paying attention. (yeah, I was That Girl.)

  3. Great post about guilty pleasures and summer activities. I also am not too fond of hot and humid, which it often is in Denmark during summer. But the weather we have right now is simply not good enough for summer – its both cold and wet and windy and I could use some hot and humid right now :)

  4. Swinging is one of my fav activities all year round. Whenever we go to a playground I occupy one of the (usually too small for me) swings and stay there forever. Happy Sunday!
