The Devil You Know by J. Black

I couldn’t wait for it so I made a trip to Barnes and Noble yesterday just so I could get my hands on a copy of Jenna Black’s new Morgan Kingsley novel, The Devil You Know. I’m going through a whole demon lovin’ period at the moment and the fact that this series not only revolves around demons, but the main demon heros are gay just make it so much more unbelievably good that I am helpless against it’s charisma.

At the end of The Devil Inside, Morgan’s brother, Andy, was shot as a way to get rid of the demon, Raphael, that was possessing him. Now Morgan waits for Andy to get out of his catatonic state all the while waiting to see what Raphael does next. She knows she’s in danger from the renegade demons who are trying to kill Lugh, the demon king (who also happens to be possessing her at the moment), but she’s ready to get off their radar. However, that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen when a family secret pops up that puts Morgan even closer to the demonic civil war. With her brother recovering from being a host and trying to figure out the truth behind her unique skills, Morgan is assured that she’s not going anywhere or doing anything she wants to right now.

Jenna Black has done it again. The Devil You Know sucked me into its story and didn’t let me go until I was done with it. The development of Morgan and Lugh’s relationship hits new points, Morgan learns more about Adam (more than she thought she ever would), and she finds new reasons to love/hate her family (reasons she never thought were possible before). The story arc itself isn’t earth shattering, but the sequence of events go at the perfect pace to keep you reading to find out what’s going to happen without overloading your brain with action and drama. The revelations made throughout the novel are surprising and yet gives us a clearer understanding on how Morgan works.

Overall, I loved this addition to the Morgan Kingsley series and it’s still running rampant in my head. I continue to see various scenes, even after reading them hours ago, and that just makes it a home run for me. That is how I judge a novel to be great – if I can continue to see the story after I have finished reading it. If the story is good, then it should linger with you and make you ask questions or speculate about what happens next. I know I have a few questions and thoughts about what I would like to see in the third novel, but I guess I’ll just have to wait for it to come out. Either way, if you’re looking for a good story, then you have to check out this series and definitely this novel.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
