Black Friday: A Familiar Face by Victoria James (+Contest)

Victoria James

BlackFriday.2012Black Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with Victoria James’ Jackson Pierce from The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby.

Jackson Pierce didn’t make his fortune entertaining every half-cocked idea, especially one involving diaper changes. Not even the cute brunette who links him to the baby in her arms can crack his icy heart.

A baby on the doorstep is the least of Hannah Woods’s problems—she has to find the baby’s uncle, or the child will end up in foster care. She sleuths her way to the reclusive CEO’s doorstep only to find six feet of holiday sexy—and a door slammed in her face. But when Jackson comes around and urges they marry for little Emily’s sake, Hannah finds herself falling for the jaded billionaire and wishing for a holiday miracle of their own…

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away an ecopy of The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby.

A Familiar Face

VJames-Billionaires BabyJackson Pierce scowled at the throng of loud, cheerful shoppers before him. If he had only made it out of town yesterday, he never would have gotten roped into doing this. Apparently his business partner-and so-called-friend-had secretly entered him into the Secret Santa exchange at work-and had promised the staff that Jackson would be personally picking out the gift. Idiot. And his friend had only bothered to tell him last night-leaving Jackson no choice but to go shopping on Black Friday. But this was it. This was the last errand he needed to scratch off his list before leaving town.

Jackson cursed all the way to the Cell-phone kiosk in the mall. He didn’t even know what the parameters of this Santa present thing were. What the hell was he supposed to buy the kid in the mailroom? He needed to buy something-at any price-and get the hell out of here. Unfortunately, the kiosk was next to the cheesy Santa Claus house. A winding line of loud, misbehaving children, and haggard looking parents waiting to see the mall-Santa, reaffirmed why he was single. He glanced away from the sad site. Get the gift. Get the hell out of the mall. Then he’d leave his friend a nasty voicemail message, reminding him never to enter him in the stupid Secret Santa Exchange again.

Just as Jackson was about to reach the counter, someone bumped into him, sending his phone tumbling to the ground. He resisted the urge to swear out loud and bent down to pick it up, before someone stepped on it. He rose quickly as an odd sensation gripped him. The familiar scent of lemons hung in the air for the briefest of seconds.

He glanced around and a woman with long brown hair and a threadbare red coat dashed away. Why did she look familiar? Jackson quickly pushed his way through the crowd, his eyes not leaving the direction the woman ran in. He had no idea why she looked familiar, or why his instincts were screaming to go after her. Jackson kept his eyes on the woman, a black scarf trailing behind her as she weaved through the crowds. Jackson sidestepped a toddler who was in the throes of an all-out temper tantrum and picked up his pace as the woman ran down a deserted corridor of mall offices. His stomach began to churn as it occurred to him why the woman looked familiar…she reminded him of his sister. But that couldn’t be…his sister was dead. The clanking and swoosh of a steel EXIT door told him she left the building.

Jackson ran; sweat trickling down his face, until he came to the closed door. He pushed against it. Locked. He cursed. Get a grip, man. He took a deep breath, surprised to feel the heaviness in his chest, the acid burning in his stomach. His sister. He ran his hands down his face with a rough sigh. There was no way. It was ridiculous. What had he been thinking? It was the stress of the mall, of the holidays. He knew he shouldn’t have listened to his friend. He was getting the hell out of here. Three hours from now, he’d be in his remote cabin, sipping his favourite whiskey. His dog would be by his side, a fire would be blazing, and there would be no thoughts of shopping, family, or Christmas. Jackson took a deep breath, embarrassed that he had actually ran after a woman he thought was his deceased sister. Absurd. He took a step forward, but his foot stepped on something. Jackson looked down, and a bead of sweat slithered down his back, and the hair on the back of his neck stood at attention.

A pink rattle. A baby rattle. Where the hell did that come from?

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  3. I love surprise baby plots. Thanks for the excerpt. A gift card would definitely be the easiest way out, but if he wanted to get something tangible, I’d go for gloves. They always make a good gift.

  4. Like everyone before me has said… Giftcard. To be exact one of the Visa type giftcards that way he has more options open to him than just a certain store.
