Black Friday: Black Friday Thoughts by Aria Kane

AKane-A Titan For Christmas

BlackFriday.2012Black Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with Aria Kane’s Jenna from A Titan for Christmas.

When Jenna’s job as an engineer makes her miss her flight home from the mining colony on Titan, she’s heartbroken she won’t be able to make it back to Earth in time for Christmas with her family. Until a coworker gives her another option: private cargo pilots sometimes take on passengers.

Grayson pilots the only ship leaving Titan in time to make it back to Earth before Christmas. He doesn’t want any passengers, but Jenna convinces him to take her on the three-day trip. Neither of them had planned for the passion that erupts between the two on the tiny cargo ship.

Then Jenna realizes Grayson is transporting extremely dangerous cargo. When she discovers why a man like Grayson would take such a risk, she has to decide whether she’ll turn him in or help him.

Black Friday Thoughts

AKane-A Titan For ChristmasJenna ran her fingers along the mini string of LED Christmas lights and sighed. Coming here had been a mistake. The people running the convenience store on the Titan mining colony didn’t seem to even realize it was Black Friday.

Not that she expected huge crowds, long lines, and big sales in the ten-by-ten foot shop. That’s not really what Black Friday meant to Jenna, anyway. The ghost of a smile pulled at the corners of her lips when she thought of her sisters, skipping through the swarming department-store aisles, singing Christmas carols even louder when frazzled shoppers frowned at them.

If Jamie were here, she’d find a way to make an inspired gift of the candy bars and personal hygiene items. Janice, as always, wouldn’t buy a single thing, but would help every stranger she saw find whatever it was they were looking for. But they were on Earth, and Jenna had only the robotic checkout machine for company. She’d come here hoping – well, she didn’t really know what she’d hoped for. Whatever it was, she wasn’t finding it.

While she was here, she thought, she might as well get some deodorant. She made her selection from the two unisex options and took it to the checkout. As she was fishing her employee card from her jacket pocket, a flash of sparkle to her right caught her eye. It wasn’t much: a few strings of red and green garland, five strands of Christmas lights, and four different kinds of shiny plastic ornaments. But it would be enough.

Maybe they know what day it is, after all,” she murmured as a smile finally found its way to her face.

She scooped up the entire contents of the display and tossed them into the checkout basket. Her total appeared on the screen – much more than it would be on Earth, but shipping costs had to be added to the price. It didn’t matter, though. In her mind, Jenna was already laying out the supplies along the gray walls of the employee break room.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
