Seduce the Darkness by G. Showalter

I’ve heard a lot about Gena Showalter, but I haven’t had a chance to read anything by her so when I was given the chance to check out the latest Alien Huntress novel, Seduce the Darkness, I took it.

The war between otherworlders and humans changed Earth beyond recognition. It also saved Bride McKells’s life. Before, the gorgeous vampire was a target for every fanatic with a stake and a crucifix. Now she’s free to roam the streets—and desperate to find others of her kind. One man claims to have the answers she seeks. Devyn, King of the Targons, is a warrior and a womanizer, and he makes no secret of how much he wants Bride—and how dangerous he could be to her in every way.

An avid collector of women, Devyn easily seduces human and otherworlder alike. Until now. Not only does Bride resist him, but she leaves Devyn feeling something entirely new . . . a bone-deep need bordering on obsession. Her blood is the key to curing a vicious alien disease, but helping Bride uncover her origins will compel her to choose between electrifying passion and a destiny that could tear her from Devyn’s side forever.

Seduce the Darkness is the sixth (seventh?) novel in the Alien Huntress series and I have to say that I never really felt like I missed anything from the previous books.  There were obvious references to earlier books, but since each novel surrounds two different individuals, it was more character development for supporting characters than anything necessary for the plot.  That is one area that I really can’t complain about for Seduce the Darkness, both Devyn and Bride had some fabulous character development.  They both had their issues and flaws, which worked beautifully with their chemistry.  The only real complaint I would have is the whole “not interested” vibe Bride has when she first meets Devyn.  Throughout the novel, we keep hearing how all woman are instantly attracted to Devyn (save one) and tend to go into giggling infatuated mode and yet Bride never does. Why was she different and was able to block out Devyn’s sex appeal?  Was there a reason for it or was she simple too stubborn about getting her information?  As I think about Seduce the Darkness, this keeps popping up in my mind. However, for things to obsess over, it’s not really that big of a deal.

As for the plot, it was good, but I’ll be honest, it didn’t draw me in all that much.  I found that it was easy to put Seduce the Darkness down when I needed to and I really never felt compelled to pick it up right away.  There are some books that when you put them down, you instantly feel the need to pick them up again and I really never felt that way.  Now that isn’t to say that the plot wasn’t good, but it just didn’t make me want to sit down and devour it.  That may be the only downside to not having read this series.  While I’ll agree that you can read this without reading any of the other novels, I would say you’re going to have a much better reading experience if you do check out the first few novels.  While the main plot was unique to Devyn and Bride, I have a feeling the subplot expands on some earlier situations that the series has already gone into.  So while I wasn’t into the whole plot, remember, that this is coming from someone who hasn’t read any of the other novels yet.

Overall, I did enjoy this novel and I would most definitely recommend Gena Showalter to others, but I would say start with the first novel in the Alien Huntress series – Awaken Me Darkly.  I’m seriously going to be checking out more by Gena Showalter, as well as her other series.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I love Gena’s books! Have you read PLAYING WITH FIRE. Its a stand alone book (I believe tho, there will be more of this character in a future book). Its one of my favorites of hers.
I love the variety she has out there. I think best to read most series in order since the flow makes more sense for me. Its worth to read the others in this series too!

  2. This was my first Showalter book, but I’ll check out PLAYING WITH FIRE next. I have the rest of this series on my TBR list now.
