Science Fiction As We Know It

If you’ve read The Vampire Shrink by Lynda Hilburn and have already pre-ordered your copy of her new novel, Dark Harvest, from Amazon, don’t be surprised if you find it in your mailbox soon. Well, I would be surprised since the publisher hasn’t changed the date, but it’s come to our attention that Amazon may be shipping them early….as in this week. If you do get yours earlier than expect, Lynda wants to know.

For those of you anxiously awaiting for Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Laughing Corpse comic coming from Marvel, they are offering a great deal up until September 9th. If you order through their website for all 15 copies, they’ll send them to you for 50% off the newstand price. Basically you’ll be getting the comics for $30 instead of paying $3.99 for each one. I already have a subscription myself, but I’m thinking I’ll cancel it for that great deal.

Here’s an interesting article – When Are Vampire Stories Science Fiction?? The writer is basically asking the question “But can a story be truly science fiction while remaining true to the spirit of the legends?”. He looks at various techniques filmmakers and other artists have used to try and cross from fantasy into the scicence fiction world.

Thanks to the Story Siren, I found out that the Bookroomreview’s Weblog is giving away a copy of The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong. She has a few more contests posted, but since they didn’t seem like paranormals, I’ll just let you follow the link if you’re interested. There are also a few contests going on at the Story Siren, so I would go over and check her out anyway (Monthly Contest and House of Dance).

There’s an interesting article at io9, where they ask Can Science Fiction Lit Keep Up With High-Tech Changes? This topic was one of the panel discussions at the latest San Diego Comic Con and involved a few science fiction authors – Robert J. Sawyer (Rollback), Ann Aguirre (Grimspace), Tobias S. Buckell (Ragamuffin), Alan Dean Foster (author of more than 100 books), Charles Stross (Saturn’s Children), and John Zakour (Dangerous Dames).

Bidisha from the Guardian.co.uk gives a unique perspective on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series.

Vampire Wire is giving away four copies of Samantha’s Graves’ Out of Time. The book is a suspense with a paranormal element: “For museum curator Jillian Talbot, her ability to see an object’s history is her little secret. She never expects it to land her in the middle of a deadly battle for money and power between dangerous underground elements.” Here’s an excerpt.

The movie Twilight has a new release date.  Summit Entertainment has changed the date to November 21st since Warner Brothers moved Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to July 17, 2009, opening the November spot.  So for all of the Twilight fans, we’ll get it to see it a lot sooner than planned.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
