Shakespeare v Lovecraft by D.R O’Brien

D.R.O'brien-ShakvLoveThe hilarious mash up in Shakespeare v Lovecraft is one for the books. In a charming novella, D.R O’Brien brings together two of my favorite topics and melds them in a classic romp. Whether you’re a fan of Shakespeare, Lovecraft, or even just looking for something new, cast your gaze to this entertaining read.

Get ready for the War of the Literary Worlds in the raucous new horror comedy, Shakespeare v Lovecraft!  In the same putrid vein as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Shakespeare v Lovecraft slithers hideously onto the literary mash-up scene, whispering of cosmic horrors and eldritch tales whilst espousing sweet soliloquys and profoundly contemplating mankind’s place in the universe. Prospero, driven dangerously insane by prolonged exposure to the dread Necronomicon, makes a terrible pact with the titanic alien beast known only as Cthulhu. Now only his enchantress daughter Miranda and a handful of history’s greatest heroes are all that stand between humanity and blasphemous eternal subjugation. It’s a bloodbath of Shakespearean proportions as Cthulhu and his eldritch companions come at our protagonists from all manner of strange geometric angles in a hideous and savage battle for supremacy.  Witness all this and more: Histrionic Heroes vs. Tentacled Terrors!!! Endless Soliloquys vs. Unnatural Silences!!! Romeo vs. Mi-Go!!! England’s Royal Beasts vs. A Shoggoth!!! The Author vs. Iambic Pentameter!!!

O’Brien brings no frills to the match ups of dramatists and monsters. Shakespeare v Lovecraft is not for the aloof as with each turn of phrase there is more than an essence of parody. Such amusing concepts such as was Romeo really all that pious are strewn through each page. Readers unfamiliar with Lovecraftian themes will not have any problem diving right in and may be even more inspired to delve deeper, feeling the call of Cthulu. As a huge fan of both, I found the tale to be heavier on the Shakespearean side, utilizing more than a couple of famous quotes.

I am not a big fan of the short story or novella simply because the best of them feel me wanting more. This was the case of Shakespeare v Lovecraft. Not only did I want more of the funny antics, but I wanted this melded world to be expanded on more than simply a decent piece of fan fiction. All in all I am still glad to have read Shakespeare v Lovecraft and would quickly do so again. Even if like me, you usually stick to full length books, this novella will definitely be worth your time.

I am a performer by trade and have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. My bookshelves are full of many genres but I have a love of fantasy, SciFi and steampunk which have only spurred my performing dreams to help one of these fabulous worlds come to life. I tend to read books with a lot of edge and grit; if it's got zombies, space battles or fantastical steam inventions, I'm in. When I'm not reading or off making my own adventures, I can be caught watching movies of every era, gaming, and being scandalously political like any good steampunk heroine.
