Touch the Dark by K. Chance

I have to say Touch the Dark by Karen Chance was a great find. It’s a vampire novel, but it doesn’t center around a vamp hunter or a necromancer, but a clairvoyant who grew up in the vampire world. Plus, unlike most of the vampire novels I’ve been reading, this one has the premise that the supernatural community is still in hiding from the humans. One very positive thing about this book was that, unlike most vampire centered novels, Chance didn’t spend too much time on speculating how old the vampires were or their personalities. She really didn’t have to because she used some very familiar names – Christopher Marlowe, Mircea Tepes, Raphael, Louis-Cesar, and Rasputin (who happens to be the bad guy) were just a few of the vampires making an appearance. She gives a little background on each person, but just enough to tell us that she isn’t changing their mortal lives, just the fact that they are vampires. This gives us an idea to their age without spending too much time on them.

If you like the Anita Blake series by L. Hamilton, then you definitely need to check out this series. I already can’t wait to get my hands on the second novel – Claimed by Shadow – and the third one doesn’t come out until next April.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Great review. Touch the Dark annoyed a bit because of the world building amidst the action, and having to wait quite a while to find out the outcome of the action. But it picked up, and was pretty good. Claimed by Shadow is absolutely amazing, though! No more world building, and you’re straight in there, and it’s just awesome!

I’ve also reviewed Touch the Dark and have linked to your review in it. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. Thanks!
