The 12th Doctor is Revealed!

Was it this past season or the season before…I can’t remember, but I’ve become a bigger fan of Doctor Who and have loved watching Matt Smith portray the 11th doctor. Prior to Smith, most of my Doctor Who experience was with David Tennant (aka #10), but I wasn’t the type to sit down in front of the television every Saturday night just because it was on.  Smith (and his companions the Ponds) changed that for me. I looked forward to each new episode, eager to see what new troubles this threesome got into.

Doctor Who - Angels in ManhattanWhen I heard the Ponds were leaving the show, I was sad and then devastated when it actually happened. I mean, did anyone watch The Angels Take Manhattan and not cry?

But I have to say, the whole storyline surrounding Clara, the impossible girl, was intriguing and I liked how it played out. Clara is another fabulous companion and I was excited to actually be there when the Doctor started wandering with a new companion (I’ve missed all the others).

Doctor Who - Doctor and ClaraHowever it seems tis the season for change as earlier this year Matt Smith announced he was planning to leave (or regenerate) after this years Christmas episode and a 12th doctor will be taking over the tardis.

“Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I’m back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!” he said. “it’s been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with ‘the ginger, the nose and the impossible one’. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys.”  (Source: HuffPostTV)

Jesse tells me I’m wrong, but it just seems early for Smith to be leaving. He hasn’t been the Doctor that long, right? The 10th was around for much longer, or so it seems, but it’s true. Earlier today, BBC announced who the 12th Doctor is going to be and it’s…Peter Capaldi.

“Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege,” Capaldi said. “Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight.” (Source: HuffPostTV)

Doc12Wait a minute.  Peter Capaldi? He’s in his 50s. Not that it is a bad thing, but I thought all the doctors regenerations were resulting in a younger version.  Was I wrong in thinking that? If you look at all the previous doctors, it seriously looks like each doctor has been younger than the first; but Capaldi is going to throw a monkey wrench into that idea. Although saying that…that is very common with Doctor Who, isn’t it? Everything seems to be going according to plan and then BAM! Something happens to completely change all perception.

To all you Whovians out there…what do we think about our 12th Doctor? Was anyone else expecting a younger doctor or was I the only one? Is anyone sad that the twelfth isn’t a woman? Does anyone think there ever will be a woman Doctor? Jesse doesn’t think so as there’s not much rationale already in place to justify a gender switch.

Capaldi will join begin his journey as the new doctor during the Doctor Who Christmas Special in December. Smith will be giving his final performances as the Eleventh Doctor during the 50th anniversary special on November 23rd and Doctor Who Christmas Special.

  1. I don’t think they intentionally made each regeneration seem younger. Although personally I don’t think Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor) seemed older than Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor).

Apparently Peter Capaldi is the same age as William Hartnell (1st Doctor) was when he started playing the part.

  2. I think he’s a great choice. obviously he couldn’t do it while he was still being Malcolm Tucker, but now Malcolm is done well, he’s prime Doctor material.

  3. Honestly? I was sure this time it would a woman–what a great twist that would have been! Still, Peter Capaldi seems like a good choice, though I’m really going to miss the goofy, wonderful exuberance of Matt Smith.
