Prince of Shadows by Nancy Gideon

NGideon-Prince-of-ShadowsGuys, I’m stunned speechless, well “LOL” stunned mostly, over Prince of Shadows by Nancy Gideon. I know not to expect or assume anything, except a never-ending twist of events that you can’t see coming and incredible characters that steal your heart; which is exactly what Gideon gives with Prince of Shadows. However, this go round took a twist I didn’t see coming. It surprised me so much that I want to re-read this entire series as quickly as I can, just to feel the rush again.

A gentle lady held hostage in a deadly play for power, Kendra Terriot’s only means of survival for herself and her family is to play to a careful courtship game. The one she chooses from the dangerous Terriot heirs will inherit the coveted crown, but the one she longs to have rescue her belongs to another.

Favored son of their cruel Shifter leader, the only calm in Cale Terriot’s necessarily violent life is his childhood love for his delicate distant cousin whom he’s pledged to make his queen. With Kendra at his side, he knows he can become the kind of ruler his clan needs, but first he must learn how to become the kind of mate she desires.

In a treacherous race for control, where weakness means death, Cale must prove he’s not the beast his beauty fears and still protect her, especially once her chosen love returns to free her. The only way to win her respect could mean surrendering his throne. The only way to win her heart could mean letting her go.

For those who don’t know, the name Terriot not only scares but infuriates every shape shifting character in this series. You know that it’s bad news if the name is even mentioned on the page, and if they show up in town, someone is about to die. These people are not known to be rational or just, only stone cold killers.  I may not like them much but I can admit that without each member of the Terriot clan, the series, and this particular story wouldn’t be so entrancing or deadly.

I didn’t expect the emotions I had as Prince of Shadows unfolded. Probably because, I thought for sure it was going to go in a certain direction. I learned quickly, I was wrong, again. Based on reputation, I thought I knew what kind of man Cale was; a monster. I just didn’t know to what extent, and when I learned about him, it tore my heart out. Kendra was exactly who I thought she’d be and it was nice to see her evolve, even though it was from horrible events. Sadly, that is as much as I can tell about Kendra and Cale or I will ruin the most important scenes. Trust me on this. But, I will say that they are just as amazing as every other character and couple that Nancy Gideon has created.  These two being together is perfection. And, once again there is a new couple from this world that has stolen my heart.

I can’t leave out that Silas and Brigit make an appearance and have an important job to do in the storyline. Sadly Max and Charlotte are only mentioned. Boo.

Even still, the cast of characters on stage were phenomenal, the good and the bad, and then you have the storyline. If the scene wasn’t deadly, it was sexy. Basically, I was in a constant state of O.M.G. in some form the entire time. There’s a gauntlet that Cale has to navigate as a punishment from his father. He has ten obstacles to get through and survive: his very lethal and angry brothers. Cale and Kendra take steamy motorcycle ride that had me wishing I wasn’t afraid of one, so I could reenact the scene. Plus, we finally get to see firsthand what it’s like to live in the Terriot compound! It is just as devious as I had imagined, and then some. The storyline is very exciting, deadly, painful, romantic, etc. etc., there isn’t an emotion or action she doesn’t cover. That means there isn’t anything dull or anything lacking, well that I could find. Do I have a complaint at all? Yeah, it ended and I don’t have the next one to dig into, damn it.

Prince of Shadows packs quite a punch in my opinion. Which wouldn’t be possible if Nancy Gideon wasn’t so crafty with misdirection and twisting a story line into a bajillion unexpected directions. She’s also slightly evil with introducing new characters, while I’m pining over the original couple from the beginning of the series to come back. It’s evil, but I love it and can’t get enough!

  1. Yet another series that I would love to start, but just have too many books on my TBR. This sounds really good.
