Thoughts on what I’ve been reading

I haven’t been doing a lot of reviewing lately, but I have been reading. You can only say “OMG it was fraking awesome” so many times before it gets old. Since I’ve mainly been reading series I’m invested in with a couple new ones sprinkled in, and to avoid saying the same thing over again, I’ve just been reading. But I do have a few thoughts of the books I’ve been reading…so here they are, in no particular order, a few mini reviews on quite a few books.

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione – the first novel in her new Moonbound Vampires series coming out in September, it was fabulous. I love the new take on vampires and while they are predators, they are not ruling the humans. If you can get your hands on it when it comes out, do so. *I need to work on a more detailed review, so don’t be surprised to see this one again later.

LIone-Bound by NightLarissa Ione’s bestselling Demonica series has captivated fans with its sensual blend of dark passion and demonic fury. Now she takes you to another intoxicating world—where a dangerous clan of wild vampires rules the night . . .

A WOMAN OUT FOR BLOOD
Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories—along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most . . .

A VAMPIRE OUT FOR REVENGE
A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his soul obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation—a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.

Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost – yes it’s a re-read but I was excited for Up from the Grave to come out this fall and wanted to give my brain a refresher. Sadly it’s not coming out until January 28th and it’s the last Cat/Bones novel! So I’ll be revisiting them again before then. *grin* I’m thinking we need to have some kind of celebratory wake for the series, but a wild fraking party for Cat & Bones to finally enjoy some kind of uninterrupted HEA.

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews – the news Kate Daniels was AMAZING and I’m starting to fall for Hugh just a little. Not as a mate for Kate, hell no she is Curran’s, but the man is quite interesting.

Biting Bad by Chloe Neill – love the Chicagoland Vamps and this one was no different. I’m loving the interactions with Jonah, and I still want to see him cause problems for Merit and Ethan. *grin* Of course, he doesn’t need to cause too much trouble right now considering the GP are trying to wage a war.

Forsaken By the Others and Silent Cravings by Jess Haines – I want more Cristoph and Ashi! Those bothersome Goliath weres, that are now property of Royce, are quite amusing and I want to see how they are doing after they have some time to get accustomed to their surroundings. We totally did not see them enough in Forsaken By the Others. Speaking of which…another fascinating read and one I quickly devoured. Yes, this is probably the one book in the series that might be considered “filler” but it was still a very fast paced, action-packed read and it only made me ache for book 6 even more.

Psy-Changelings by Nalini Singh – I hadn’t read all the individual novellas for the Psy-Changeling series until Wild Invitation was released and I have to say, if you haven’t either, do so. Go grab the collection and sit down and devour it. I love seeing all the individual stories of couples we’ve seen glimpses of. Tamsyn and Nate’s story was amusing, but not as much as Cooper and Graces. *grin* Plus I did get a chance to jump into Heart of Obsidian while it was still knew and damn. Has anyone not fallen in love with Kaleb Krychek yet?

London Steampunk series by Bec McMaster – I don’t know why it took me so long to pick up Kiss of Steel, but I’m so glad I did. Loved it and have devoured Heart of Iron and My Lady Quicksilver. So can’t wait for the fourth novel to come out! *Again, I need to work on a more detailed review, so don’t be surprised to see this one again later.

BMcMaster-My Lady QuicksilverDetermined to destroy the Echelon she despises, Rosalind Fairchild is on seemingly easy mission. Get in. Uncover the secrets of her brother’s disappearance. And get out.

In order to infiltrate the Nighthawks and find their leader, Sir Jasper Lynch, Rosalind will pose as their secretary. But she doesn’t count on Lynch being such a dangerously charismatic man, challenging her at every turn, forcing her to re-evaluate everything she knows about the enemy.

He could be her most dangerous nemesis – or the ally she never dreamed existed.

Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones – yes, I was late to this party but I am firmly on the bandwagon now. Love Charley and I need to go find my copy of Fifth Grave Past the Light because I do not remember seeing it on my kindle.

Delicious and the Brown Siblings by Lauren Dane – I love the Brown Siblings and after reading the new Delicious spin-off series eariler this year (Tart and Lush),  I’ve been itching to get caught up with Cope (Inside Out) and Adrian’s (Never Enough) stories, which I just finished. I love Lauren Dane’s romances and she’s still my go-to author for when I need a good romp with a plot.

Celestrial Blues by Vicki Pettersson – Seriously…I am loving this series. It’s also probably the first time I’ve also gotten a glare from an author. Granted it was a virtual one, but Vicki Pettersson was not amused when I asked how long I had to wait before I could get my hands on the third one. Considering she hadn’t started it yet, yeah well…I want book 3!! The Taken and The Lost are fabulous and part of my desire for wanting book 3 is because I WANT TO KNOW WHO KILLED GRIFFIN SHAW and I think I know who it is! Seriously, this are fabulous mysteries and you really should read them. They’re more noir mysteries than urban fantasy, but there’s enough of a paranormal element that I’m all over it. *grin*

Asylum Tales by Jocelynn Drake – If you love her Dark Days series, then you’ll love Gage. Most of the books I read have a female lead, so reading/hearing the story through the eyes of a male, it’s oddly awesome. I loved Angel’s Ink and Dead Man’s Deal, but I’m still waiting to hear whether we’ll get a book 3 or not. Gage, Bronx, Trixie and even Gideon are all sorts of awesome, and the world itself is utterly fascinating. I’m really hoping we’ll get word of book 3 soon.

Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs – Talk about an attention grabber. I seriously could not put this one down. If I recall correctly, I finished Mercy in one day, completely ignoring many chores I had to get done. Was it me or was it setting up a new story arc that could get interesting?

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare – I’m going to see the movie this week, but I have to say while I thought the story was good, I’m not as hooked on it as I am with other series. Don’t get me wrong, it was well paced and had enough plot twists to keep me interested, but I wasn’t crazy about the ending. That little obstacle to Jace and Clary’s relationship doesn’t work for me and the whole love triangle seems a little forced. Well, I’m seeing a love triangle, but it’s not a full blown competition yet. While I have an interest in reading the rest of the series, I’m not running out for the books either.

So that’s what I’ve been reading this year, plus a few quick novellas and whatnot. There was a month or two there where I didn’t pick up a book once (damn you Candy Crush!), so I’m trying to make time to read more often. As such, here is what is currently queued up on my phone/Kindle:

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Some really good looking books here I need to download ! Been on a reading spree over the summer, but still got a good-sized TBR pile. (apparently, I should also be ‘social’, whatever this means).

I’m a little bit devastated though, as I didn’t realise Up From the Grave would be the last Cat & Bones book, which is a huge sad face, but reading the link to Jeaniene’s blog, it does make sense. And tbh, anything she writes is all sorts of awesome anyway.

Very jealous you have Drawn Together and Tempt the stars though! ;-)
