#BooknerdProblem number 103 – The Book Hangover. Lets face it, all of us book nerds have suffered from this a time or fifty. The perpetual post-reading haze that remains long after the book has been closed, where you can’t seem to face the real world because you are still fully immersed in the fictional world of amazeballs. All you want to do is curl up fetal-style and lament that your beloved book boyfriend is not real. Yes, that. Erin McCarthy’s Sweet is the epitome of BNP#103, but let me assure you, it was worth it.

EMcCarthy-SweetJessica Sweet thought going away to college would finally make her free of her parents’ constant judgments and insistence she play chastity club role model for their church events, but if anything, the freedom has made her realize she can’t go home and be a hypocrite anymore. Tired of dodging their questions, she stays at school over the summer and lands in an unexpected crash pad: Riley Mann’s house.

Sarcastic, cocky, and full of opinions, Riley is also sexy personified with tattoos and biceps earned from working as a roofer all day. Not the right guy for her even if Jessica was looking for a relationship, which she is definitely not. But Jessica knows that Riley hides the burden of having to raise his younger brothers behind that grin and as she helps him get his house in order for a custody hearing, they begin to fall hard for each other, and she is forced to question what she’s hiding herself.

Jessica has never had a problem getting naked with a guy, but when it comes to showing Riley how she truly feels inside, her fear of rejection may just ruin the best thing—the best guy—to ever happen to her…

Sweet is book #2 in McCarthy’s new adult True Believers series. It is a follow up to last spring’s sensational TrueSweet is a standalone story that can be read in or out of order, although let me tell you True was equally deserving of it’s own book hangover, and I highly recommend picking it up.

Jessica Sweet, is a Ministers daughter tired of conforming to the image of a pure and chaste darling her parents demand of her. In college, she has found a new level of liberation. She can do whatever (and whomever) she wants, before she is forced into a mold that has never fit. Eager to retain this freedom, she concocts a plan that will allow her to stay in her college town during summer break. The only snag in the plan is having to crash for a week at the home of the rude & deplorable Riley Mann.

My last name shouldn’t be Sweet, it should be Sour. Jessica Sour. That was me. A big tart, mouth puckering, acidic mess.

Riley Mann, is the very definition of cocky and arrogant with a capital A-R-R-O-G-A-N-T. Behind the drop dead gorgeous looks (tats & muscles oh my!) and rough around the edges personality is a honest and loyal guy struggling to provide for his young brothers and to keep their family afloat.

“Nice,” he said in approval. “Fuck this eating like a bird shit. You’re hungry, own it. Round it out with a burp and I’ll think you’re basically the perfect woman.”

Despite Jessica’s not-so-quiet disapproval of Riley’s home and habits, and Riley’s immunity to Jessica’s charms, the two manage to see beyond the surface of socio-economic circumstance. They help each other discover the strength they need to overcome their greatest obstacles and discover the true meaning of family, friendship and love.

“Do you know that I need you? I don’t just want you, I need you.”

That last quote is what landed Riley in my male harem (is there an actual word for that? ;) of book boyfriends. I can’t help it, I’m a girly girl at heart, I’m a sucker for the swoony lines. Share with me one of your all time favorite swoon-worthy quotes or gush a little bit about some of your own book boyfriends for a chance to win an ecopy of Sweet! I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I have to gush on Jerricho Barrons from the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. He is THE BIG BAD ALPHA! Lost my mind when I read …“He pulls me around and kisses me. “You’re Mac,” he says. “And I’m Jericho. And nothing else matters. Never will. You exist in a place that is beyond all rules for me. Do you understand that? I do. Jericho Barrons just told me he loves me.”

  2. I think one of my favorite swoon worthy quotes is from Jane Austen’s Persuasion when, in a letter to his love, Captain Wentworth says/writes “You pierce my soul.” Yeah, I want that.

  3. Love me some Jerricho Barrons – I melted when I read … “You’re Mac,” he says. “And I’m Jericho. And nothing else matters. Never will. You exist in a place that is beyond all rules for me. Do you understand that?” I do. Jericho Barrons just told me he loves me.”
