Guest Author: Sonya Clark talks Forbidden Love (+Contest)

Sonya ClarkI am excited to welcome author Sonya Clark, who is celebrating the release of her new novel, Trancehack.

It’s 2065. Those born with magic abilities live in government-run zones, without rights or freedoms. Fear of magic created this segregated world and fear keeps it intact.

A high-profile murder brings Detective Nathan Perez to Magic Born Zone 13. He’s had little experience with the Magic Born and isn’t sure what to expect during his first encounter with a witch, but he never thought he’d be so drawn to her.

Trancehacker Calla Vesper uses magic to break into computers and aid the Magic Born underground. She has no interest in helping a cop, even if he is smoking-hot, but money’s tight and Nate offers a tidy amount for help navigating the Zone. Calla’s determined to keep it all business, but sparks start flying before the investigation even gets started.

When Calla’s trancehacking and Nathan’s investigation uncover a conspiracy, Calla becomes a target. Nate can protect her by keeping her role a secret—but then who will protect Nate?

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a digital copy of Trancehack.

Forbidden Love

Forbidden love – one of the oldest and greatest of the romance tropes. When simply loving someone becomes an act of rebellion, it adds a new level of intensity and angst to a love story. My new release Trancehack is many things, but at its heart it’s a story of forbidden love, of two people who should not love each other, who cannot be together. The odds are against them, and so are their friends, society, and even the law itself.

Trancehack is set in a bleak future where the Magic Born are feared and repressed. Identified through DNA testing, Magic Born are sent to live in urban zones with no rights of citizenship. Not every city has a zone, so when he moves to New Corinth, police detective Nate Perez is new to the delicate balance of Normals and Magic Born trying to exist side by side. A high profile murder case takes him to Freaktown, the nickname for Magic Born Zone 13. Nate is a good cop and a military veteran, the kind of solid, dependable man who believes in doing the right thing. When he begins to suspect he may have arrested the wrong person, he’s tempted to blow the case wide open and let the consequences fall where they may.

Except for one thing: those consequences would also be falling all over beautiful, exasperating witch Calla Vesper. Fascinated with her from the moment they meet, Nate slowly loses his head and his heart as she helps him navigate the strange world of Freaktown. Calla has secrets of her own to protect, as well as a fragile heart damaged by the harsh conditions of life in a zone.

But it’s not just their own circumstances that stand between Nate and Calla. In this world, the Magic Born can’t be outside the zone for more than eighteen hours. They’re barred from entry in many of the city’s nicer businesses and entertainment venues. They can’t vote, can’t go to school off-zone, and are restricted in what jobs they can hold down. And they can’t marry.

Magic Born and Normals are not supposed to fall in love. But Nate and Calla do, despite everything pitted against them. The decision they have to make is, is what they have a love worth fighting for?

In this brief exclusive excerpt, Calla is fighting her attraction to Nate – but not very successfully.

Trapped in his embrace, Calla had to choose between placing her hands on his chest or on his arms. She tried his arms first, resting her hands gingerly on taut forearms. Not wanting to hold on tight, she let her fingers move up and down his smooth, warm skin. He pulled her closer, his hands moving to the small of her back. The slow, hypnotic rhythm of the music had to be the reason she allowed it. Had to be the reason she moved her hips against him, the reason she let her hands travel up his chest, pressing against the hard muscle there, to drape around his neck.

She looked up to find him staring at her intently. Eyes she knew to be hazel were black in the darkness of the club. Witchlight from the walls and other dancers reflected off the sharp angles of his face. Too hard to be handsome, except for that mouth. His lips drew her attention. For a long moment there was nothing but the music and her own guilty desire.

Some angry part of her brain kicked in and said, This is the closest you’ve ever been to a Normal. What the hell are you doing? Tearing her gaze from his mouth, she looked at the floor, the walls, anywhere but at Nate. Someone leaving the dance floor brushed against them, forcing her even closer to the cop for a moment. Calla pushed away, breaking his hold.

Feeling ridiculous and out of sorts, she lashed out. “You’re stepping on my feet, asshole.”

“I’m tired of you calling me asshole,” he said. “My name is Nate. I want you to call me by name.”

Calla shook her head. “You want me to like you. Why?”

He shrugged. “Maybe because I like you.”

That was no good at all. She looked away. “Don’t.”

“Too late.” He claimed her hips again, drawing her close and wrapping his arms around her.

The song dripped honey into her veins, making it impossible to break away from him again. She didn’t fight it. It was just the music. Not him. Not his solidity, his warmth, the feel of his hands on her body, the curve of his lips or the darkness revealing a promise in his eyes. No, it wasn’t Nate. It was just the music.
