Canada celebrates Thanksgiving the 2nd Monday in October, meaning we don’t have Black Friday. Instead, we have Boxing Day (like the Brits) and that’s when we have our big sales—the day after Christmas. The heroine of my latest release—Wild Justice—is Canadian, so her take on Black Friday might be…a little different.

Nadia Stafford’s Black Friday

It’s Thanksgiving. Well, it is south of the border, which means up here, I have a lodge filled with guests trying to escape their families and the shopping frenzy that is Black Friday. I don’t blame them either. The last time I spent Thanksgiving with my family was 1999, and by the end of it, I was kind of hoping the world really would end before the new millennium, so I wouldn’t have to suffer through the 2000 holiday season. As it turned out, that wasn’t an issue. Before next October rolled around, my mother had moved to Arizona with her new boyfriend and my brother Brad was in New York, where he said he had a starring role in an avant guarde holiday production, which I interpreted as “playing store Santa in Soho.”

Still, given the choice between Thanksgiving with my family and braving the crowds for holiday shopping, I’ll take the dinner from hell. I ventured out on Boxing Day last year. It was Emma’s fault. My lodge caretaker decided she really needed those half-priced cards and wrapping paper for next year, and guess who had to accompany her? I promised I’d buy her cards and paper—at full price—next year. Hell, I even dug in my heels and refused to go along, which made her pull the “I’m an old lady with a bad hip” routine, and guilt tripped me into going.

The problem? Emma didn’t just want to shop in Peterborough. Apparently, whatever cards and paper she wanted were only to be found in Toronto. So we set out. At five AM. I usually rise early to jog—I don’t rise that early. For Emma, I did it. By seven, we reached the mall. By seven-thirty, I was contemplating how many people I’d have to kill to get near the goddamned wrapping paper. Hey, I’m a professional hitman. It’s an option.

Nine AM, I have the cards and paper, and Emma reveals her master plan. She’s actually brought me out so I can buy belated gifts for my friends. I tell her I don’t have any. She provides a list. Yeah, for a killer, I’m an extrovert. Just not the gift-buying variety.

Seven hours of shopping. That’s how long it took to fill the list. After that, we drove home and I logged online to ask Quinn if he had anyone he needed me to kill, as a present to me—stress relief. He thought I was kidding.

That was my one experience with holiday-sale shopping. It will not be repeated. This year, I’m staying at the lodge, with a houseful of like-minded folks, who intend to spend the day rock-climbing and skeet-shooting and ice-fishing, then sitting around a snow-banked bonfire with beer and s’mores. That’s my idea of a happy holiday.

Meet Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She’s the author of the “Otherworld” urban fantasy series, “Darkest Powers” & “Darkness Rising” teen paranormal trilogies as well as the “Cainsville” modern gothic series and “Blackwell Pages” middle-grade fantasy adventure trilogy (co-written as K.L.
