True Blood: Episode 1 – Strange Love

I finally got a chance to watch the new HBO show True Blood based on Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries novels. The show starts out with the obvious beginning just like in Dead Until Dark, where Sookie meets Bill for the first time in Merlotte’s.

I have to say that I really like Anna Paquin as Sookie. She’s more or less what I have always envisioned and she does a really good job with the character. One I first saw a picture of Stephen Moyer, I wasn’t sure what I thought about him playing Bill, but so far I’m liking what I see. It seems to be that they have completely redone Tara’s character. Especially since I don’t remember her ever working at Merlotte’s. Doesn’t Tara own a clothing store in the novels? It seems like Jason is dead on and he’s definitely egotistical enough. I am in love with Sam. I don’t know what I had envisioned him as, but whoever is playing him I so want. He is just sexy.

Since it’s on HBO, the show is actually the entire hour and there wasn’t any commercials, so that is a huge bonus. Granted, I’m annoyed that it’s on a cable station that isn’t offered on basic and I really don’t have either, but I gotta love the internet. After watching the first episode, I am definitely hooked and can’t wait until next weeks episode. From what I remember, they seem to be sticking pretty close to the original novels, with a few exceptions, but when it comes to film, you have to expect that. Not everything in a novel will translate easily to the screen and I think Alan Ball did an exceptional job so far. As long as people don’t go in expecting an exact duplicate from the novel and look at it as another vampire story, then it’s going to get a huge audience I think.

For those who don’t have access to HBO, you can view the episode at SurfTheChannel.com.
