Look Who’s Going to RT: Mia Marshall

Mia MarshallCan you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
I’m Mia Marshall, and I write the Elements urban fantasy series. Shifting Selves, Elements #2, is up for an RT Reviewers’ Choice Award this year, and Turning Tides, Elements #3, is coming out May 6. Gratuitous self-promotion aside, I’m also a mountain-dwelling coffee fiend who spends too much time in front of my computer, unless I’m busy obeying the whims of my various feline overlords.

Can you introduce us to the world(s) that you have created?
The Elements books (Broken Elements,Shifting SelvesTurning Tides) are set amongst the elementals and shifters of Lake Tahoe, ancient races born from the earth’s original magic. It’s a world full of magic, mayhem, and no small amount of humor. Plus, there’s a slow-burn romance with an enigmatic bear shifter, just to spice things up a bit!

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
This is my second time, and I’m counting down the days. I love RT, and I love New Orleans, so this pretty much feels like my perfect week. For newcomers, I’d say don’t worry so much about hitting every session and event. You’ll burn out in two days if you try that. Have a few can’t-miss items, but be ready to go with the flow. And leave time to see the city!

Also, if you see one of your favorite authors, say hi. Trust me, we never tire of hearing a reader say they love our books.

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to or are planning on attending?
I am panel-free this year, so I get to relax and just be an audience member. There are several UF genre panels and business sessions on my agenda, but mainly I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of authors and readers. It’s what RT is all about, after all!

Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to or experiencing while in New Orleans?
The food. The drinks. The entire vibe of the Quarter. My only complaint about this year’s convention is it’s too short. How are we supposed to attend all the amazing convention events AND explore the city? Is it too late to ask RT to extend the convention by a few days, just for this year?

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
Look up. Then look up some more. When you see a fairly tall woman, keep looking. That’s not me. When you see the woman who makes you say, “Whoa. I wonder if she played professional basketball,” then you’ve found me. I can pretty much guarantee I’ll be the tallest woman there, even in flats. Unless there actually is a basketball team staying at the hotel, in which case look for the really tall woman clutching a cafe au lait or a Sazerac at all times.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
