You know one thing that bothers me? When chapters are too long.
I must admit, I feel a little guilty for being annoyed at something which is trivial and frankly a little silly. That being said, it still annoys me.
I know I am not the only one who has an ideal chapter length because whenever I talk with other avid readers, I seem to encounter people who hate chapters that are too short. I am in the camp of people who doesn’t mind a new chapter every 4 or 5 pages. In fact, I think it can keep the pace up.
What I don’t like is reading a book while I’m busy and have to pause only a third of a way through a chapter. The story feels disrupted and I have actually noticed I am less likely to return to a book with long chapters than I am to one on the shorter end.
That being said, I still feel like there’s a sweet spot of 10-15 pages. For many, this is on the short end. I can say for certain I’ve come across some chapters with northward of 100 pages, aka exorbitantly long in my book.
What do you think? Do you have an ideal chapter length which tends to keep you interested?
