Look Who’s Going to RT: Jackie Kessler / Jackie Morse Kessler

Jackie Kessler

Jackie KesslerCan you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
I write fiction for teens and adults. I also have a full-time day job, moonlight as a freelance editor, am pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction), and will be testing for my black belt in tae kwon do this June. Oh, and I’m a fool for Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who.

Can you introduce us to the world(s) that you have created?
My urban fantasy heroine, a former demon named Jezebel, will be in a story in an upcoming charity anthology called FANTASY FOR GOOD, to help raise money for colon cancer research. Recently, I wrote the Riders of the Apocalypse quartet for teens (the last story, BREATH, was an RT top pick last year). In May, the first book in a new teen series will hit the shelves: TO BEAR AN IRON KEY, a traditional fantasy about a witch, a thief, the fey, a stolen Key, and Midsummer.

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
Veteran! This will be my seventh RT. Best advice? Wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. There will be walking, and standing, and you never know if a panel/workshop room will be too hot or too cold.

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to or are planning on attending?
I’ll be teaching at the pre-con Writer’s Bootcamp on Monday and Tuesday, leading a workshop on Wednesday about overcoming challenges and achieving goals, and leading another workshop on Friday about writing blood-pumping scenes in urban fantasy. I’ll also be doing a speed reading during Teen Day and attending the Teen Day party.

Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to or experiencing while in New Orleans?
Seeing everyone! The people are always the best part of RT for me. :)

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
I am barely five feet tall. Okay, I’m not even five feet, according to my doctor’s office, but I’m thinking that hairspray can help me hit that “barely” point. I’ll probably be wearing my glove-toe shoes (COMFY!!!); no heels for me during the day. There is an excellent chance I’ll be wearing a t-shirt (two of my favorites are “DON’T BLINK” and “PLOTTING”).

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
