The Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison

KHarrison_TheWitchWithNoName

KHarrison_TheWitchWithNoNameI adore the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. It is one of my favorite UF series. This review is bittersweet. If you aren’t already aware The Witch with No Name is the final book in the series. I couldn’t wait to read it, I didn’t want to say goodbye to some truly awesome characters. But, as always, Kim delivered with an epic story–and her promised HEA for Rachel, Ivy, Jenks and the rest of the gang.

It’s Rachel Morgan’s ultimate adventure . . . and anything can happen in this final book in the New York Times bestselling Hollows series.

Rachel Morgan has come a long way from her early days as an inexperienced bounty hunter. She’s faced vampires and werewolves, banshees, witches, and soul-eating demons. She’s crossed worlds, channeled gods, and accepted her place as a day-walking demon. She’s lost friends and lovers and family, and an old enemy has unexpectedly become something much more.

But power demands responsibility, and world-changers must always pay a price. Rachel has known that this day would come—and now it is here.

To save Ivy’s soul and the rest of the living vampires, to keep the demonic ever after and our own world from destruction, Rachel Morgan will risk everything. . . .

This review will be a bit different others I usually write. One doesn’t get to the final novel in a 14 book series without liking the author and the writing style. By this time, all the characters and their relationships are well established, world building complete…and soooo much history. So, no, this isn’t a novel you can just pick up and read standalone. Too much has happened, too much you’d need to know to really get the story.

If you asked me to pick a favorite character, I probably couldn’t. I love Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, Bis…and even Al, Trent and Newt. Actually, I really kinda adore Newt–the crazy crazy demon. She somewhat reminds me of Nyx from Kresley Cole’s IAD series.  But, Newt really shines in The Witch with No Name, and I think, solidified her place in my list of truly fantastic characters.

The Witch with No Name was action packed from the first page.  Once again, Rachel finds herself in a position of having to act off the cuff–with little to no plan–to save her friends. Oh, and once again, save the worlds.  As the blurb alludes to, something has happened and not only is Cincinnati, and the world as Rachel and the gang know it, at risk, but so is the Ever After.  In true Rachel fashion, she again and again does some truly risky things–with little to no plan or sometimes even time to put together a plan.  One shouldn’t be surprised, that as usual, in order to succeed, Rachel needs not only some luck, but the help from all her friends.

Since The Witch with No Name is the final Hollows novel, all pending storylines will be wrapped up, and I promise, Kim does not let us down. She delivers what she’s always promised us–an HEA. Rachel not only gets hers, but so does Ivy. I don’t think I could have asked for anything different. I’ve gone to multiple signings in Cincinnati for releases of some of the other Hollow books (I live in Central KY, so it’s an easy drive…and I actually used to live in the Hollows, so this series is special because I know all places referenced *G*) and Kim always said she wasn’t sure who Rachel would end up with for her HEA…that she wouldn’t know until she got there herself. Looking back, now that the series is complete, I can sometimes see that, and now I kinda wonder if that was totally true–at least for these last few books.

Thank you, Kim, for a truly fantastic ride over these last years. I’ve truly enjoyed the series and will greatly miss all the wonderful characters. I think I’ll miss Jenks’ vernacular and light-heartedness the most (though I think he might tell me to stop and grow a pair, for Tinks sake ;) ). But, the good news is, I can always reconnect with them by re-reading–and the perk being I get the entire story, start to finish now. No more waiting with bated breath for release day.  So, instead of goodbye, I’ll just say, until next time.
