Flight from Hell by Yasmine Galenorn

YGalenorn_FlightfromHellSometimes I’m just in the mood for a dark, nitty-gritty UF. I can always count on  Yasmine Galenorn to give me a dark and gritty story, and her latest novella, Flight from Hell did not disappoint. Flight from Hell is a bridge between Galenorn’s Otherworld series and her upcoming series, Fly by Night.  After reading Flight from Hell, I cannot wait to read the first full novel in this new series.

New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn returns with another thrilling foray into Otherworld—introducing a new cast of heroes alongside the D’Artigo sisters…

When the half-demon Carter approaches Menolly and her sisters desperately asking for their help, they think he’s just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex’s.

Now, Alex must join forces with the D’Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex’s past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

First, if you haven’t read the first 14-15 novels in the Otherworld series, I would not suggest picking up Flight from Hell. So much has happened, and while there is a nugget of history (this is a novella, afterall) from prior happenings, one could be easily lost and not really understand anything going on or have a clue who all the players are.

Flight from Hell is told mainly from Menolly’s POV, but the prologue and epilogue are told through Shimmer’s POV. I really like Shimmer.  She’s had a hard life thus far and is now exiled from the Dragon Reaches to earthside. From what little of her inner thoughts you get to see, I get the feeling she is going to end up being a sassy, powerful ally to the D’Artigo sisters. I can’t give too much away about Shimmer, lest I spoil Flight from Hell for you, but let’s just say she isn’t your typical dragon, for a few reasons. Some of the reasons could cause her hardships in any battles she may help out in in the future, but she is still a dragon, so she’ll definitely be an asset.

I think the main purpose of Flight from Hell is to introduce us to some of, what I’m hoping will be, the main players in the Fly by Night series, including the main antagonist. The series will be a spin-off from the Otherworld, so I’m hoping there will be some story arc development regarding Shadow Wing.  Overall, Flight from Hell was an awesome, dark and gritty novella and has me super excited about the new spin-off series.
