On the Edge by I. Andrews

If you love Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniel series, then you’re going to lover her new series, the Edge, which begins with On the Edge.

Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either.

Rose thought if she practiced her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn’t turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power).

But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them—or they’ll devour the Edge and everyone in it…

You’ve probably been seeing reviews for Ilona Andrew’s On the Edge all over the place, and I’m not really sure what everyone else is saying, but I will tell you this – I loved it.  I could go on and say that Andrews creates a fascinating world that survives in between two different, yet similar, realities; that the characters are amazing and the chemistry they exhibit keeps the reader completely entertained; and that the plot keeps you guessing while not leaving you completely clueless.  I could say all this, but if you’re a fan of Andrew’s Kate Daniels series, then you probably already know these qualities are going to be there.  Ilona Andrews has an amazing way with words and she totally delivers with On the Edge.

Personally, I love the whole idea of the Edge.  It’s a different take on alternate realities that not only works with what we know, but incorporates what we’re familiar with.  That probably sounds odd, and I’ll admit, I’ve been having trouble putting into words what I like about On the Edge, but c’mon…anyone who puts Wal-mart and a shapeshifter together – in the same scene – is giving us a huge clue that this new world is going to be unlike any we’ve visited before.  For this first novel, there isn’t a lot of interaction between the three different realities, it’s there, but Andrews is setting up her world by not giving us everything, just what we need in order to navigate around.  We’re given enough glimpses of the dual realities to whet our appetite while not taking away from the budding relationship between Rose and Declan.  Quite honestly, Andrews is teasing us with these glimpses and I, for one, can not wait until we get to see more of them.

Overall, I loved On the Edge and I really cannot think of how to express this other than to say go buy the book.  I know I’m missing something you may want to know, but the story just worked, so just ask me what you want to know.  Seriously, head out and pick this book up even if you haven’t read Ilona Andrews before.  You’re not going to regret it.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
