Guest Author: A.E. Jones

AE JonesI am excited to welcome author A.E. Jones, who is celebrating the release of her debut album, Mind Sweeper.

An angel, a demon and a vampire walk into a bar. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s just another day in the life of Kyle McKinley.

Kyle was born with the ability to erase memories, and the inability to keep her opinions to herself. She and her teammates – a vampire who looks like a sexy pirate with fangs, and a Shamat demon with a penchant for Italian pastries – provide supernatural damage control when humans see too much. Today’s problem? A sword-wielding angel and a demon had a supernatural smackdown during happy hour in a Cleveland bar, leaving behind a headless vampire and a dozen human witnesses.

This latest supernatural slip-up is attracting all kinds of attention. So much attention that the police step in, and Kyle has to deal with Joe Dalton, a know-it-all human with the sexiest turquoise eyes she has ever seen. Kyle has no room in her life for yet another human who will treat her like a freak. However, Dalton definitely makes her naughty parts sit up and take notice, and it’s more than mutual. But before they can act on their attraction, they must join forces to solve a dangerous puzzle. And when they uncover the truth, the apocalyptic ripple effect forces Kyle to make a choice. Learn to trust again, or risk losing everyone she cares about, including Dalton.

Why I Write about All Kinds of Paranormal

Thank you so much for having me here today on Literary Escapism. Since this site is dedicated to things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, I thought it would be fun to tell you why I write what I do. My books are paranormal romance/urban fantasy. I love imagining and creating fantastic powers and abilities that the supernatural in my stories can wield. When I started writing, it made sense to me to include multiple kinds of supernatural. Why? Well, for me I think it comes down to the same adage I have for humans. I don’t think we are on the only sentient beings in the universe. So it makes sense to me that in the world I create, there wouldn’t be just vampires or just demons or just shifters. And in my Mind Sweeper Series they all exist in my ‘supe world.’

In some respects it makes my world unique. Now, I have read other paranormal writers who also include more than one species, so I don’t want you to think I am a paranormal pioneer, but instead, I think that my species’ interactions are unique.

And since I am writing about various supernatural, I also have to come up with the mythology or backstory, if you will, for ALL my beings. So you may ask why would I want to put in the extra work?

First of all, I don’t consider world building ‘work.’ I get jazzed about my characters and the rules or truths that I come up with for their species.

Second, it makes my world diverse – in a paranormal kind of way. A Paranormal United Nations so to speak. Where they not only squabble and fight within their own clans, but they also squabble and fight across species. I mean, since my vamps are a tad bit egotistical, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they don’t get along too well with the demon population. And since demon blood is bitter, vamps don’t see much use for them to begin with.

Now my demons are a crazy bunch. Twelve different kinds living harmoniously and not so harmoniously on earth. At least the ones who are allowed to live on earth, that is. The others in the demon realm? They are the ones humans need to look out for.

And then my shifters get thrown into the supernatural melting pot. They can turn into all different kinds of animals which makes things a lot more fun. Since they are extremely territorial, they aren’t too keen on demon or vamp interference.

Oh wait, I almost forgot about the angels who play a part in my world. After all, if I’m going to have demons, I need angels. Yin and Yang. And these angels are not perfect or all-knowing because if they were that would be kind of boring. And that is one word I don’t want associated with my stories.

So did I paint a picture for you? To me, more species means more opportunities for powers and conflicts and resolutions. And since I write romance, it means adding attraction and sometimes forbidden relationships across species. Imagine the supernatural version of Romeo and Juliet. Cool, right? Ultimately, the paranormal diversity gives me more stories to tell. And that means my job is never boring.

Meet A.E. Jones!

AEJones-Mind SweeperGrowing up a TV junkie, award winning author AE Jones oftentimes rewrote endings of episodes in her head when she didn’t like the outcome. She immersed herself in sci-fi and soap operas. But when Buffy hit the little screen she knew her true love was paranormal. Now she spends her nights weaving stories about all variation of supernatural—their angst and their humor. After all life is about both…whether you sport fangs or not.

AE lives in Ohio with her eclectic family and friends who in no way resembles any characters in her books. Honest. Now her two cats are another story altogether.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
