Edged Blade by J.C. Daniels

JCDaniels-Edged-BladeThe fourth installment in J.C. Daniels’ Colbana Files, Edged Blade, finds Kit Colbana still reeling from prior events and working towards rebuilding her life. The sexual tension between her and Damon is palpable, but Kit has so much pain to work through before she can let Damon love her again. The angst and fear, coupled with Kit’s overwhelming perseverance and survival instinct, provides for a fantastic emotional journey in the midst of all the badassery.

In the year since her life was torn apart, Kit Colbana has slowly rebuilt herself. There’s a promise of hope in the relationship with the alpha of the local shapeshifters and she no longer comes screaming into wakefulness. Life’s not perfect but then again, when was it ever?

When her best friend Justin comes to her for help, there’s little question as to what her answer will be. Witches are disappearing and Justin won’t rest until he has answers. Soon, they learn that it’s not just witches who’ve gone missing, but vampires and shifters, too.

Unlikely alliances are forged as Kit and Justin found themselves drawn into a twisted web of lies and betrayal. As the clock counts down and the culprit behind recent disappearances is revealed, those Kit loves the most become the target of somebody who will kill to protect an ugly secret.

Kit is a lovely combination of strength and vulnerability. Her use of bravado to mask a lifetime of pain is sure to hit a nerve. It makes her a more realistic and relatable heroine. Survival becomes Kit’s daily goal. I find myself rooting for her and hoping that she gets the happy ending that she deserves. Kit’s unimaginable history of torture is fodder for the PTSD that she experiences throughout Edged Blade. The thoughtful and insightful portrayal of a woman navigating through the emotional repercussions of trauma (keeping in mind that her recent trauma likely brought back pain and memories of her torture at the hands of her family years ago) felt honest and moving. Kit is definitely a badass. She’s strong, intelligent, and resourceful with a past that would cripple a lesser person. I can’t begin to describe how much I enjoy reading of her exploits.

Edged Blade begins with the tension between Kit and Damon at an all-time high. What I loved about their pairing was that they came together as equals. With Kit working to manage her PTSD, they are no longer equals. Also, add in the fact that Kit’s witch ex-boyfriend/investigative collaborator makes no bones about the fact that he still loves her and things become a bit…interesting. Daniels doesn’t take the easy way out by creating a love-triangle. Instead, she acknowledges the awkward situation and lets Kit and Damon work through their issues honestly. Damon is a paragon of love and support. Misguided at times, he only wants the best for Kit and it shows. Justin is a terrific supporting character. He loves a woman that now belongs to someone else. I have high hopes for Justin following the end of this book.

Once again, J.C. Daniels hits it out of the park with Edged Blade. Through all of her trials and tribulations, Kit survived. She may not be the person that she was before, but she isn’t completely broken. The love, friendship, and dangerous adventures kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. If I had anything critical to say, it would be that I did not want the story to end. So now, I will (try to) patiently await the next installment.

About Sarah 47 Articles
A 30-something mother of a teenage (going on 30) daughter, I read between 4-8 books a week. Between work, chauffeur responsibilities, and reading, I don’t have much free time . However, I do like to knit and crochet in the winter (quality scarves and hats are highly underrated!). My favorite genres are urban fantasy, contemporary romance, and paranormal romance. I tend to binge read when I find a great new series, so I love to discover new-to-me series that already have several books out.
