Bear Attraction by Jennifer Ashley

As much as I love the Shifter Unbound series by Jennifer Ashley, the novellas usually don’t do it for me. However, her novella Bear Attraction was surprisingly good. A female alpha bear-Shifter is pretty rare in PNR books, but I loved it. (Really, I just want more bears in PNR. Is that too much to ask for?)

As the military liaison between the human Shifter Bureau and Shiftertown, Walker is often stuck trying to appease both sides—and angering both. So when bear-Shifter Rebecca is captured taking a run in a restricted area, Walker has to talk fast to get her released. The compromise: if Rebecca helps him find a missing woman—thought to have been abducted by a Shifter—she won’t be charged and executed.

Mate-less Rebecca is not happy to be under Walker’s supervision. As a bear used to roaming for miles, she hates being confined and restricted, she distrusts anything involving humans, and—worst of all—the strong and handsome Walker starts triggering her mating need.

They have no choice but to work together, and as they continue their search for the missing girl, uncovering secrets neither Shifters nor humans want them to know, both Walker and Rebecca find it hard not to mix business with pleasure…

Rebecca and Walker first met in Tiger Magic, and even then the chemistry between the two was apparent. Despite the rampant sexual tension, the plot of Bear Attraction focused on their job to find the missing woman. Crazy, right? A romance story where the characters put off having sex in order to get their job done. But it works.

Walker is the type of man who likes to get things done before moving on to pleasure. Working together on the case allowed Rebecca and Walker to learn about each other, and understand each other before moving into a romantic relationship. The differences between humans and shifters are vast – including how weak humans are compared to shifters. Rebecca knew she would need a man strong enough to handle her as a woman and as a shifter.

My only real complaint was the fact that Walker was still more dominant than Rebecca. Even though he was human, and Rebecca was an alpha female bear. Yes, alpha men can be super sexy, but can we please, just once, have it where the woman calls the shots?

Overall, I enjoyed Bear Attraction. A missing-persons case, lots of sexual tension, and an ending with a twist – what’s not to love? Without giving anything away, Jennifer Ashley definitely opened up new things to explore in the future Shifter Unbound books, and I can’t wait to see where she’s goes with it.
